Fretwork Basket Scroll Saw Pattern

I call this a basket because it does not have a lid. It's probably still a box, but you can decide. The parts are all cut from 1/4-inch thick wood, and the construction is slot and tab. The interior of the box measures 9 inches by 9.5 inches and is 4.5 inches tall.

Here's a tip when cutting projects that use slot and tab construction: the pattern will be the exact size, in this case, 0.25 inches for the slots. However, your wood will probably not be the exact size. For instance, Baltic birch is actually manufactured to the metric system. What we call 1/4-inch BB plywood is actually 6mm. 6mm is slightly smaller than 1/4 inch, so the parts may not fit if cut accurately to the pattern.

I lay the edge of the board I am going to cut over the slot on the paper pattern. This gives me an indication of how much I need to adjust my cut to make the parts fit together. I don't go to the trouble of marking the size on the pattern; I just estimate how much to undercut the pattern. If I have a 1-inch-long by 1/4-inch slot, the length will be accurate. I will need to undercut the 1/4-inch width for a good fit. I try to err on the side of too tight because I can always sand or cut more off.
