I have always believed that hobbies are an essential part of our lives. My daughter enjoys plants, my wife is into scrapbooking, my brother enjoys restoring old tools and the list goes on. One thing I notice is that when they are involved in those hobbies they are more relaxed and happy.

It is so easy to get busy with day-to-day work and chores that we forget to have fun. Hobbies can be a great way to just kick back and enjoy something you are passionate about. Hobbies can be as simple as a walk in nature, to as complex as mastering the art of chess. If you are reading this then you are likely into crafting with wood.

Remember to allocate time for your hobbies. Even if you can only spare an hour, there are various ways to indulge in your passion. You can conduct research, acquire necessary supplies, tidy up your workshop, or even sharpen your pencil in preparation for your next crossword puzzle. The key is to prioritize and make room for the activities that bring you joy.

These workshop signs are not too large and can be cut from plywood. If you are comfortable using Inkscape you could easily edit the sign with the name of the wood crafter.

My patterns are easily edited in Inkscape.

 Second Pattern for Today

For you watchers of the Royal family here is a Royal Carriage Basket Pattern. It is cut from 1/4" thick wood. The rendered image makes it look a little larger than it actually is. The carriage is just under ten inches long and six inches wide.

Some tools are more useful than others for a scroll saw artist.

It would be nice to have a large shop full of woodworking tools but that is not always possible. Most of us have to make choices because of space and or cash. If you are primarily a scroll saw user then some tools will be more useful than others. Let me show you an example. My disc sander corrects two serious scroll saw miscuts in about ten seconds.

Errors on geometric shapes will stand out more than errors on organic shapes. If you wander of the pattern line on a leaf it may not be noticeable. Wander off a circle and it is obvious.
I cut this four-inch circle and came way off the pattern line in two places. They are clearly seen as errors.

I leave the pattern on the board and head to my disc sander. It is simple to sand up to the pattern line and remove the miscuts in just seconds. Way better than recutting the piece again.

Now we have a near-perfect circle.

I'm not saying that the disc sander is the most important tool in a scroll saw artist shop but it should be a strong consideration just for its ability to erase errors. A belt sander works nearly as well but my favorite is the disc sander. The table in front of the disc allows for more accurate sanding.
