As a young man, I enjoyed keeping pets that most people don't prefer. I had snakes, lizards, and piranha. I handled large tarantulas at one point but they were a bit too much for me so I passed on those as pets. I think my grandmother got me interested because she always had chameleons for me when I was just five or six years old. She was a farm girl growing up and animals were animals to her. If she came across a snake in her garden she had no problem removing it.
I have handled six-foot boa snakes and six-inch tarantulas. The strength of the boa was amazing. I owned a couple of boas but never that large. I think the largest I had was about two feet. They were very passive and easy to handle. The most aggressive snakes I owned were simple garter snakes. I can't count the number of bites I have received from those snakes.
When I had the opportunity to handle the tarantula I was nervous but mostly because the lady who worked with it told me that dropping one can kill it. Apparently, their body is easily ruptured. The animal started on my palm and walked up to my shoulder. I have to admit, when it got close to my face I realized I could not own one. It is okay to have respect for potential bites but you can't fear the bite and I was fearful.
My marriage ended my unusual choice of pets. Patty was not going to live in the same house with a snake. 😁
