Birdhouse Scroll Saw Pattern.

This birdhouse is 6" wide and 9" tall. It is cut from 1/2" and 1/4" thick wood. If you want to use this project outdoors make sure you use Titebond II waterproof glue and exterior paint.

I sometimes get emails asking why I do not include dimensions(width and length) in my patterns. The simple reason is that they are not needed for most projects. As scroll saw users we apply the pattern directly to the wood and cut the pattern. The only measurement that is needed is the thickness of the wood. For this pattern, I made an exception.

The two roof pieces, both side walls, and the base are square and can be easier cut with a table saw. Because there are no slots and tabs for assembling you will get a better glue joint if you use a table saw to cut those parts.

This does not mean you have to have a table saw to make this project. You can still cut all the pieces with the scroll saw. You just need to be a bit more careful to make sure the cuts are square. When you do glue up the pieces make sure to use good clamping pressure and allow the glue to cure before removing the clamps.

All the pieces need to be flush at the back.

Guessing which of my patterns will have a good download rate.

Coming from a technical background I like to monitor stats. Every day when I post a pattern I monitor the first day download rate. On day one, a solid pattern will get close to 2,000 downloads. A weaker pattern will get around 500. I do this to try to do more patterns that you all will enjoy. After over 15 years of doing almost daily patterns, I still am not good at predicting the download rate. I also just like to do strange patterns sometimes.

For example, The Moai statue felt a little weird and I expected it to get only a few downloads. It ended up getting over 1500 first-day downloads. That is pretty strong.

The veggie tray and spoon rest also had good download numbers. I think that was because they are useful projects.

By far the most popular download in the last couple of weeks was the geese pattern. It had nearly double the number of downloads as the other patterns.

The cowboy art pattern was the lowest number of downloads. There is always a lot of feedback about gun patterns.

The purpose of this write-up is simply to say that I do try to come up with patterns I think you will enjoy. I have to avoid some topics because they are too controversial. I also avoid expert-level projects simply because they take too long for me to design. To be honest, If a pattern gets complicated the download rate drops significantly.

As you can imagine I get tons of requests for patterns. I keep a to-do list of your suggestions and go through the list from time to time. Some requests are an instant no because they involve trademark material or are too narrow of a topic. An example of this is a flag for another country other than the US. I have readers in many countries but the numbers in each country are small compared to the US.
