Teachers Pencil Box Scroll Saw Pattern.

I had a good friend who has since passed away. His daughter is a teacher. Every year at the start of school he would go out and purchase supplies for her classroom. There were items that she needed for her class that the school did not supply.

Well, over 90 percent of teachers spend their own money on school supplies and other items their students need to succeed. Just before the pandemic, educators on average spent around $500 of their own money on classroom supplies over the course of the year. That amount has probably increased this year.

On top of the expense, teachers in many districts are in short supply. Many who were close to retiring left after the trauma of the last couple of years. Others simply pursued different careers.

When teachers are surveyed about why they are leaving the profession they reply...
Rising school violence, burnout, and stagnating pay. The profession was severely damaged by the pandemic.

I live just across the Ohio River from Louisville KY. They started the new school year with a shortage of bus drivers. They hired a consulting firm to edit the bus routes. The first day was so bad that they had to cancel school for the next two days. Some children were on busses for multiple hours and some never got picked up at all. Just another sign that things in our school systems need help.

The problems are not equal in every school district. Some districts are better equipped to handle problems but others need all the help they can get. If you have the means and opportunity please support your local schools.

The bulk of teacher purchases is spent on paper, notebooks, binders, clipboards, crayons, pencils, dry-erase markers, glue sticks, and organizing bins. Many have to purchase their own soap and hand sanitizer because not enough is provided, or in some cases, none is provided at all.

I'll come down from my soap box now before I fall and hurt myself. 😋
