Until we moved back to Indiana a couple of years ago, I had always lived in town. I still live in a neighborhood but we are out in the county. I am very close to farms with cattle and a few lamas. Lots of chickens and even ducks. I can hear coyotes at night so I feel just a bit country.π
Several years ago I was with a friend who had a sister who lived on a farm and they raised cattle. We visited the farm and they were getting the cattle ready to do pink eye medication. They asked me to help. I was nervous but the cattle seemed gentle so I jumped in. They had a setup in the barn where they brought the cows into a chute and the husband farmer put the medicine in their eyes. It was going great. Then I hear something snorting. They were bringing the bull into the chute for his meds. I was terrified and took a couple of steps back. They pulled the bull into the chute and he backed out. They pulled him in again and he backed out again. The farmer motioned to me and said grab that 2X4 board and when the bull gets in the chute shove it between the rails behind the butt of the bull. Now I'm shaking but I did what he said and shoved the board behind the bull. I was relieved until the bull decided to show me his ability to snap that board in half and back out again. I was in total shock.
The farmer then did something that shocked me even more. He grabbed these pliers that had a ring thing on the end. He stuck that ring in the bull's nose. That bull went anyplace the farmer told him to go. I had experienced what being a farmer was like and have had tremendous respect ever since.
Thanks to all the full and part-time farmers out there who keep us city folks fed. I truly believe most of us would starve in a matter of days left to our own food collection. π This pattern if for you.
