Bevel Cut Bowl Scroll Saw Pattern

Bevel-cut bowls from the scroll saw can be difficult to execute. Before you read any further look at the cross-cut image below. A 90-degree cut allows the piece to come completely out of the blank in either direction. When we set the blade at an appropriate angle the piece will get wedged when you try to remove it in one direction. We can use this wedge to our advantage.

The reason it can be difficult is that there is more than one factor involved. The thickness of the wood, the thickness of the blade, the angle of the blade, and the direction of the cut(clockwise/counterclockwise).

If this is your first time using bevel cuts to make a bowl then I highly suggest practicing on scrap wood until you have these concepts understood.

Depending on how your mind's eye sees spatial concepts this will either be easy or difficult. I personally struggled with this type of cut when I first started. I thought I understood it then realized I did not understand it as well as I thought.

The direction of the cut can make a difference if there is an obvious to the piece. This pattern does not have a clear to so it could be cut in either direction. If the upper rim had text on then the direction of the cut would be critical. That is just one example of where things can go wrong.

The pattern does not show the thickness of the wood because you can use what you have. You simply need to adjust the angle for the different thicknesses of the wood.

Notice that at larger angles, the relief is shallower.
