The box is ten inches long. It is cut from 1/4" thick wood. The top decoration is a hummingbird and a flower. An extra option is to line the interior walls with 1/8" plywood so the box is enclosed.

There is a story behind the second pattern, My mother, in her later years lived in an assisted living apartment complex. Many of the ladies loved to do crafts. They would often display the crafts on their front hallway door. I would hear them talking about who had the best hall decorations in the commons area. They were serious about defending who decorated the hallway best. My mom was a long-time artist and craftsperson. She was pretty talented and often had the best hallway crafts. A few of the ladies were a little jealous and one time her door crafts went missing. I thought my mom was going to call the FBI. 😂  We never found the missing flower arrangement; my mom never forgot about it either.

That is what was on my mind when I designed this door ornament. My mom would have kindly told me how much she loved it then after I left she would have added a flower arrangement to it and made it ten times better. Like I said she was talented.

I truly believe that everyone needs a creative hobby

I would be lost if I did not spend my time creating things. That could be a scroll saw project or a computer program. It all feels the same to me. I can be in a poor mood and if I retreat to my shop and start making something I can feel my mood shifting.

Crafting is like an escape from the chaos of everyday life. Whether it's knitting, woodworking, or scroll sawing, the simple act of creating something with your own hands can be incredibly grounding. It helps shift your focus from the negative thoughts in your head to the task right in front of you, providing a sense of calm and purpose. This kind of mindfulness is a great way to reduce stress and anxiety, almost like a form of meditation. Plus, there’s just something so satisfying about seeing a project come to life, knowing that you put your own time, energy, and creativity into it.

Beyond relaxation, crafting can boost your mood and self-esteem. When you complete a project, there’s that little burst of pride and joy – you’ve made something that didn't exist before, and that’s no small feat! It’s a wonderful reminder of your capabilities, even when the world feels uncertain. Plus, sharing your creations with loved ones, or even just sharing the stories behind them, can create meaningful connections. Crafting gives you a sense of accomplishment, helps you learn new skills, and adds a bit of happiness to the everyday routine. It’s more than just a hobby – it’s healing with a creative twist.

I bring this up to a group of folks who already understand the benefits of crafting. You guys have experienced all of these things and more. What we can all do is to make sure that others see our happiness with our craft. Especially younger folks. There is so much entertainment available today that it can be easy to overlook the art of crafting. Watching TV or staring at our smartphones all day may be entertaining but there is little feeling of achievement and value in those forms of entertainment.

I am not saying that we need to preach the value of our hobby. That may be going too far but when the subject comes up it is fine to let people know how rewarding it is. Let them know that it does not take a master's level of skill to make great projects. Any able-bodied person can use the scroll saw and with just a little practice turn out beautiful projects.
