Patty and I have taken short vacations to Gatlinburg, TN, many times. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is stunning year-round, but fall is truly spectacular. If you can visit when the leaves have just changed, it's a sight to behold. When I was a kid, my family used to go there too, and spotting bears was way more common back then. You can still see them, but not as often nowadays.

Shortly after the COVID situation started improving, my daughter Kellie, her husband Shane, Patty, and I took a trip together—we even brought Holly along. We spent a couple of nights in a lovely cabin just outside Gatlinburg's city limits. One night, as we were heading out to catch a show, Patty stayed behind at the cabin to look after Holly. About a block down the road, we spotted a huge bear—the biggest I had ever seen in that area.

I grabbed my phone and called Patty to warn her not to go out with Holly. When she asked why, I told her there was a big bear just down the street. Needless to say, she stayed in.

In recent trips to the mountains, we've only seen three or four bears. I heard that the rangers have relocated as many as they could deeper into the mountains to keep both the bears and tourists safe.

On another note, the two bear cub fence sitters in my pattern are between 8.5 and 10 inches long. Their bodies and legs are about 3/4 inch thick. I added a 1/8-inch backer board, but that's optional.

The Buffalo joke pattern is just over 10" long. Two layers of 1/4" thick plywood. My sense of humor is a little twisted but I found the joke funny. We have a few bison in Souther Indiana on farms and parks. We always called them buffalo and sometimes still do. They may be bison but buffalo is a much funnier name.

Here's a short video clip of a black bear strolling through the parking lot of a hotel in Gatlinburg. We stayed at that hotel a few years back. It wasn’t a huge bear, but I’d give him all the room he wants. Haha!
