I enjoy designing these holiday patterns. Not only are they fun to design, but they are also some of the easier patterns to design because the themes are so obvious. It varies, but if I design two patterns for a post, they take on average four hours to complete. These two patterns took me under two and a half hours. I did not spend more than a couple of minutes deciding on the theme of the patterns.
The Thanksgiving Turkey pattern is over ten inches wide. The pattern calls for 1/4" thick wood. Plywood is a good option for both of these patterns. Holiday patterns scream for color. I normally like to use a wash of paint so the wood grain shows through.
The Christmas Wreath is eight inches wide, and all the layers are 1/4" thick. The letters might be a small challenge. They are about 7" long, so take your time and remember that glue fixes broken parts. I feel like this wreath would make a nice Christmas gift for family and friends. Except for the letters, the other parts are going to be easy to cut. I like to use a #3 blade when cutting intricate parts like the letters. It makes the cut slower, but you will be less likely to break it.
Gluing painted surfaces can be a challenge.
When you’re gluing painted wood parts together, the main issue isn’t really the type of wood — it’s the paint. Glue bonds best to bare, porous wood fibers. Paint acts like a barrier and prevents the adhesive from soaking in, so even the strongest glue won’t hold well if you’re bonding paint to paint.
You will likely have better luck if you leave bare wood where the parts will be bonded. It is easier for you not to paint those areas, but you can sand off the paint if needed. Obviously, you have to keep any area that shows paint. Use a low-grit sandpaper because you want a rough surface where the glue is.
