The history of Christmas nutcrackers is a journey from functional folklore to global holiday icon, rooted in the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) region of Germany. While wooden tools for cracking nuts existed for centuries, the familiar doll-like soldier form emerged in the late 17th century as a symbol of protection and good luck; German folklore held that these stoic figures would bare their teeth to ward off evil spirits while serving the household. By the 1870s, woodworker Friedrich Wilhelm Füchtner, often called the "father of the nutcracker," began the first mass production of the lathe-turned designs we recognize today—frequently modeled after kings and soldiers as a quiet satire, allowing the working class to make authority figures perform menial labor. Their transformation into a worldwide Christmas staple, however, arrived in the mid-20th century, propelled by the immense popularity of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker ballet and American soldiers returning from World War II with the dolls as souvenirs, cementing their status as purely decorative sentinels of the holiday season. The Three Nutcracker pattern is about 10" tall and 10" wide. The pattern calls for 3/4", 1/4", and 1/8" thick wood.

One option is to use easy-to-find Baltic birch plywood and paint it in different color uniforms. Traditional colors are like the image above.
