Super Geek

Here is a simple pattern for the geeks in your like. I would cut this from 1/4" wood.

I'm still away from home in training for work. Going into my fourth week. Boy am I ready to be home. I am a real home-body and don't travel well. I'm missing my wife and daughter and yes I miss my workshop. I can't wait to get home and make some saw dust.

As soon as i get back to my shop I'll work on some more interesting patterns. I've been working on a few but I need my shop to test cut them.

I appreciate everyone sticking around while the blog is so slow. Hang in there with me and I'll get things cooking as soon as I get back.

The Folding Rule Blog

David Pruett writer of The Folding Rule Blog has designed a nice little scroll saw blade holder. Watch the short video and if you are interested jump over to The Folding Rule and pick up the plans. While you are there spend some time looking around Davids blog.

Scroll Saw Cross Pattern

This cross pattern stands a little over 9" tall. Enjoy.

Things have been a little slow here for a while. I'm still away from home and will be for several more days. I'll try to keep things going as best I can. Hang in there with me and I'll get things back to normal as soon as I can.

Golf Diva

This is a quick pattern that a friend ask for. It requires a 1 7/16" mini clock insert.

I just survived my first weekend away from home while I'm in training. There were a few hours I was not sure I would. I came down with the flu Friday night and I'm just now starting to feel better. I have a few emails that I have not answered yet but I'll get caught up soon.

I mentioned in my last post the terrible conditions in parts of Australia. I have heard from a few of my readers there and It's great to hear they are okay. There are over 170 deaths from the fires. Sounds like arson is suspected in at least some of the fires. Just wanted to let you guys know my prayers are with you all.

CorelDraw Essential Training

One of the original purposes of my blog was to show how easy it is to make patterns for your scroll saw. Designing original patterns can take the hobby to a whole new level of fun. The stumbling block for many scrollers is the learning curve required to use many of the programs available. I use CorelDraw X4. It has the easiest learning curve of any vector graphics program I have used. That said it does require some effort.

I have produced training videos for CorelDraw but they are aimed at pattern design. You still need to learn the basics. This video will show you a website where you can get this training at a very reasonable price.

I am not being paid by lynda.com. I am just a satisfied customer of there service. Make sure you read the terms before you sign up. Lynda has a great reputation for quality training.

Important Notice: Some email clients block embedded video content. If you are reading this in the email newsletter you may not see the video. Please visit my blog where you will find the complete post under the daily content.

Six more mini clock patterns

This pattern book has six more mini clock patterns. Each clock requires a 1 7/16" mini clock insert.

I have several readers in Australia. You may have seen on the news that much of the country has been savaged by incredibly high temps and out of control fires. The temperatures have climbed to over 110 Fahrenheit in some areas. I just want to wish all of you guys the best of luck. Sounds like there might be a little break in the temps soon. This picture from Bob shows one of the wild fires. This is a view from his property. Stay safe bob.

Key to my Heart

This is another pattern for Valentines Day. Because I'm away from my shop the patterns are going to have to be simple. I know some of you want harder projects to cut. Be patient with me and when I get home from training I promise I will have something for you.

In the mean time it's nice to have a collection of fast easy to cut projects.

Corel Draw comment by Barry Kintner

Here is an email I received that I wanted to share. Some great points here for those of you looking at buying CorelDraw for pattern design. Barry has been using illustration programs for 15 years so I value his opinion. I think you will also. Barry also pointed out that there are hundreds of tutorials and tips on the web that demonstrate features of the older versions. He mentions looking on ebay for the CorelDraw suite. That is how I bought CorelDraw the first time. I did get a good buy but I always like to mention that you need to know what you are looking at when you make a purchase on ebay. Do your home work and watch the seller feedback.
Good day -

-- I just stumbled upon a video (then more) of yours on YouTube for
scroll saw use with Corel. I like the comments regarding using Corel -
but - I'd like you to also comment that a person interested in using
Corel does NOT have to get the latest version.

-- While they may not have all the 'interactive' tools - they can get
an older version of CorelDRAW Suite (the full suite) for as little as
$15 on eBay. I routinely recommend CorelDRAW and believe that version
9 is about the single best investment that anyone can make if they
want to learn to use a vector program. Version 9 will make nearly
everything that X3 or X4 will do - just a LOT less expensive (for the
full suite).

-- I am an unapologetic user of Corel products and would like to see
them reach their former glory. At one time, into the 90s, Corel had
as much as 86% of the graphics market worldwide - Illustrator,
Freehand, etc do not come close in either ease of learning or power -
especially in the cost department. So the price is not 'expensive'
but in reality is cheeeap - even for hobbyists. And then you can
lessen the cost by getting an older version. X3 is the first that had
a BIG jump in actual utility over v9. And you can get X3 for under
$100 - all legal and unrestricted - not a student version.

-- I like the videos - nice and smooth w good audio. I need metal and
scroll saw help. :-)

Barry

Clock from Bob Calhoun

This picture was sent to me by Bob Calhoun. He cut this from the pattern I posted the other day. The writing on the clock says "You dream it I build it". For those of you lucky enough to know Bob you know this fits him to a tee. Thanks for the picture Bob. I did not get a chance to make the project so it was nice to see it completed.

For Sale

Well I arrived in Leesburg VA for my 3 weeks of training. Already getting home sick. I don't travel well. I look forward to getting back home and spending time in the shop. While I'm here I should have time to make some changes to the blog. I have some new ideas that I hope will make it a better experience for everyone.

I put together this sign pattern tonight. Just something simple and I think funny. Problem is my wife might take it serious.

The sign is 8" x 10". I would suggest Baltic Birch plywood.

You Dream It I Build It

This shop clock is 8 inches in diameter. You will need a clock movement for this project.

I have been spending this weekend getting ready for a trip. I'll be out of town for about three weeks in training. I should be able to keep the blog going while I'm away. I have a laptop setup with everything I need to blog. I will be able to get my email so that should not be a problem. The only problem I have is that I won't have access to my shop. Anyway that's the plan. We will just have to see how it works out.

I won't have much to do on the weekends while I'm away so if I have a good enough internet connection I might open the live video chat next Saturday night. I'll post the time here if it works out.
