


There are a couple of things to consider before you start this project. The wood needs to be at least 7/8" thick so both frames and the 1/4" dowel will all fit. You also need to have a drill press to drill the hole for the dowel. You might be able to get it accurate enough with a hand drill but it will be difficult. The outside frame is 3 1/2" wide. You will either need a long 1/4" drill bit or mark carefully and drill from both sides.
Last, it helps that the wood you use has some character. A nice grain pattern or some spalting can add a lot to a small project like this.
