Mothers Day Ornament.

She who must be obeyed, Mom. I think most moms will like this ornament.

A note for some of you who are having problems downloading the patterns. If you get a message that says the file is corrupt give this a try. Use the right mouse button to click the download icon and select "Save As". Save the file to your computer someplace where you can find it. The desktop is an easy place to start. Then open the pattern from your desktop instead of trying to open it from your browser. Sometimes the hook between the browser and Acrobat gets wanky and causes this message when the file is actually fine. Saving it to your computer and not trying to open it in your browser seems to take care of the problem. If you want to actually fix the problem you can uninstall Acrobat Reader and reinstall it. That will usually take care of it. I have seen this happen several times and the file has never actually been corrupt.

Another adorable free pattern from Toymaker Press.

They just keep coming up with wonderful free patterns for me to share with you guys. This adorable pattern comes to us from Toymaker Press . These simple designs are great for that quick project when time is tight. John and Cynthia have a knack for taking simple and making it purrrrrfect. Sorry about that. This momma cat and her kitties makes a nice Mother's day nick-nack.

First impressions of the Excalibur EX-21 Scroll Saw.

I have had a couple days with my new Excalibur saw so I thought I would put together a video showing my first impressions. I don't intend this to be a review of the saw because I simply have not had enough time using the saw to have that kind of knowledge yet.

If you are considering a purchase of the Excalibur saw this might give you a few more facts to help with your decision.

One area that I do have a definite opinion on is where I purchased my saw. I bought it from Ray over a Seyco. I already knew the reputations Ray has in the business and that reputation is well founded in my opinion. I have a Woodcraft in my town and love their store. I could have picked up the saw there but I wanted to buy from Ray so I waited for it to be shipped. Ray's service is first rate and if you are considering a purchase of any of his products I'm convinced you can feel confident you will get first rate service. www.seyco.com If you have any questions contact Ray and he will be happy to assist you. Tell him Steve Good sent you and he will charge you 10% more for associating with such rift raft. Oh wait, maybe that's a bad idea. Just pretend you don't know me just to be safe. Now let's watch the videos.

Who is your favorite driver?

I needed some time working on my new Excalibur scroll saw tonight. The Scroll Bench has a video using my Key chain pattern maker program to create 3d patterns. I like what he has done so I decided to put several patterns together of your favorite Nascar drivers. These key chains are esay to make and all your Nascar fan friends will want one. The pattern book contains several of the top drivers.

I used the Excalibur to cut the samples and I have to say I'm impressed so far. I wanted to get a little more experience with the saw before I gave my first impressions in a video. I still plan to put together a video this weekend showing the features and my opinion of the saw.

If you are not familiar with how to cut these 3D key chains just watch the video below and you will have all the info you need to get started.

Give Thanks from Toymaker Press.

This is another free pattern from Toymaker Press. I was hoping to get this up in time for Good Friday but as usual I'm behind. Thanks again to John and Cynthia for their generosity with these wonderful patterns.

I am still working on the follow up video of the Excalibur EX-21 scroll saw. If I don't get called out to work tonight and tomorrow I should be able to get it finished.

Excalibur EX-21 unboxing and assembly video.

I received my Excalibur EX-21 scroll saw today. I purchased it from Ray over at Seyco. Seyco sells the Excalibur line of saws. They have the 16 inch, 21 inch and 30 inch model. I decided on the 21 inch model. I have used the saw before but have always been happy with my DeWalt DW788 so I have put off this purchase until now.

In the video that follows I show the un-boxing and assembly of the stand and saw. I'll give a few tips and make some general comments. Tomorrow I plan to do the second video showing the features of the saw.

I want to thank Ray for making the purchasing process painless and easy. The saw was back-ordered for a few days but Ray kept me informed and the saw arrived in the expected time frame.

If you like what you see in this video and the follow-up video tomorrow night please contact Ray and he will be more than happy to answer any questions you might have. You can also visit the Seyco web site at this link. www.seyco.com

I need a favor from one of my readers in London England. I need a London newspaper from the day of Prince William and Kate's wedding. My wife is totally intrigued with the up coming Royal wedding. I would love to be able to give her a souvenir from the day. If any one would be able to help me out with this please drop me an email and we can make the arrangements. Just put "wedding" in the subject so I am sure to see it. Thanks to anyone that can help.

Scroll Saw Train Whistle Video

This train whistle can be made in just a few minutes. It's a great little project for the kids and grand kids when they visit your shop. All you will need is a 3/4" dowel rod and a 5/16" dowel rod. Watch the video below and you will be whistling while you work in no time.

Relief Cut Shelf.

This shelf is 25 inches long and 5 1/2 inches deep. The center medallion is a relief cut to allow it to protrude from the back board. There is a simple tutorial that explains relief cuts in the pattern. On this shelf I used a #5 blade and set the table angle to 3 degrees to get a 1/4" relief.

Round over the medallion to give it a smooth look before you glue it in place.

The top shelf has a router detail on the front and sides to give it a more finished look.

The Shelf is attached with screws that are counter sunk and plugged with wood buttons. The brackets are attached to the medallion board with glue only.

The video below shows how to make a bevel gauge and also explains relief cuts in more detail.

Pete the Bird Scroll Saw Pattern

Here is another simple animal project. Pete the bird is easy to make and can be made from scraps you have laying around. I did a minimal amount of contouring but the more you do the better Pete will look.

Carper Scooter Choo Choo from Toymaker Press.

Hey guys I have another free pattern form Cynthia and John over at Toymaker Press. This pattern combines the fun of a toy train with the challenge of a puzzle. This one has the cute factor all over it. I bet this would be a great seller at the right venue.

All the patters that Toymaker Press offer are distributed Royalty Free. This means you can make as many of the projects as you like for personal or commercial use. Of course the patterns are copyrighted but this is a great deal. I am always advising crafters that sell scroll saw work to specialize. I believe there is potential with these patterns to make a small nicely specialized toy craft business. Of course it takes more than great patterns to make a successful business but it's a good start.

I would love to see a booth at a well organized arts and craft show displaying several of these toys. I imagine a big sign over the booth saying "Toys, Batteries not Included or Needed!".

Revisiting Portrait Patterns.

I have received several emails lately asking about designing Portrait style patterns. It has been a long time since we talked about this subject so I thought I would post a video I did some time back. In this tutorial I show how to use Paint Shop Pro X2 to create a portrait pattern of Elvis.

This program can be found on Amazon.com and the newest version is under $80. If you don't mind buying the last version it can be had for under $50 before shipping. Link to PSP on Amazon.

There are other bitmap graphics program that can do the same thing but I like all the features of PSP. There are even a couple of free programs that can get the job done. One free program is Gimp. It is a very nicely featured program that you can download from http://www.gimp.org/.

The menus and selection will be different from program to program but the technique is the same. If you are interested in designing portrait patterns take a look at this tutorial video and I think you will agree it's pretty easy.

Nutty the Squirrel.

Meet Nutty, he stands 5 inches tall and is 10 inches long nose to tail. This guy can be made by scrollers of any skill level. There are no interior cuts and only 10 parts to cut out. You do want to spend a little time to contour the edges to round him up a little.

Scrollsaw Workshop Book Giveaway for March.

It's time for the monthly book giveaway. If you entered for the month of March watch the video below to see if you were the winner. We had a sponsor for the giveaway this month. Toymaker Press is donating the prize and it is wonderful to have them on board. This months winner will receive the Wood Toy Cars and Trucks pattern book. These nostalgic patterns are easy to make and your young children and grandchildren will love them. Visit their web site and support them for supporting the Scrollsaw Workshop. Thanks again John and Cynthia.

Check out the pictures below. I received an email from Bob Miller the other day with these pictures. The chess pieces were cut by Bob on his scroll saw from my 3D Chess pattern I posted a couple years ago. I never had time to finish the complete set myself so it was great to see the whole set. Bob also built the chess board which is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship. I am making today's free pattern download this chess set for those of you that might have missed it.

If you need basic instruction on cutting 3d pieces on the scroll saw I have a video in the video archive showing the techniques needed. Thanks Bob, the board and pieces are incredible.

Small Tray Scroll Saw Pattern.

This tray measures 10.5" x 6". It could be used as a perfume tray or a centerpiece on a table. To speed up the cutting you should stack cut the front and back and the two sides. The sides are 1/4" thick and the bottom is 1/2" thick. I used a cove bit in my router to add a 1/4" detail to the bottom.

I will be drawing for the book giveaway tomorrow afternoon. This drawing will be for the Toymaker Press toy pattern book. Good luck to all those that entered.
