Jesus with Children Scroll Saw Portrait Pattern.

The source image for this portrait patterns is from an early 1900's bible illustration. The image is now in the public domain. I don't usually do many portrait style patterns because they are very time consuming to get right. I'm just not very good at the technique. This one is 8 X 10. It's not terribly complex so you can probably cut it in just a few sessions.. I always use Baltic Birch Ply for portrait pattern. It is also the only time when I use spiral scroll saw blades. Spiral blades take a little practice but I think they are the most effective way to cut this style pattern.

The person I look up to as the best portrait style designer is Charles Dearing. Charles is a master portrait pattern designer. His technique is nearly flawless. He designs the patters the old fashion way with pen and pencil. He meticulously traces the original image always finding just the right areas to pull out the detail.

Many of his patterns are not for the faint of heart. They can be challenging but the satisfaction is worth the time spent.  Charles has a book titled "Wildlife Portraits in Wood". You can find the book on Amazon. The stock on Amazon seems to come and go. I think it was showing only nine left when I checked. For a couple more dollars you can find it at the publisher's site Fox Chapel Publishing.

You may also wish to check out Charles Facebook page.  If you are new to the portrait style of scroll saw patterns let me warn you before you visit his facebook page. Your mind will be blown. Like I said he is a master at his craft and he is very prolific. If you spend an hour looking at his work and miss dinner I can't help you.

Here is a sample of a Charles Dearing design. Take a look at the size of this portrait compared to the end of the scroll saw on the right. It's huge!

Don't quote me on this but I think Charles still does commission work through his Facebook page. You can contact him if you are interested. The easiest way to see his work on his Facebook page is to click the photos link at the top.

Garden Animals Scroll Saw Patterns.

It's that time of year when we are all out in the yard getting our landscaping and gardens in shape. My wife wanted a raised flower garden for Mother's day. I'm a little late but I got it done this weekend. She has an injury that makes it difficult to work down low so this will give her a chance to work comfortably. It's 24 inches tall but I put a raised bottom in to reduce the amount of dirt I would have to buy. It ended up only needing 25 cubic feet of soil. I got it filled up yesterday so now it just need flowers. I think she likes it. Building this made me think about designing a garden project. Today's project is very simple. You can cut these in minutes. Add a little paint and they are ready to plant.

These Garden Animal patterns can decorate your potted flowers or plant them right in your garden.
If you want them larger for outdoor use you can use the RapidResizer utility on the blog. There are eleven different animal patterns to choose from. I used 1/4" thick Baltic Birch ply and added a good coat of paint to protect the wood.

Email address change.

I want to pass along a change with my email address. I have several different email addresses but one is going away. Some of you still use the one I am losing so please make this change. If you have me listed as stevegood AT insightbb.com please stop using that address. I am spelling out the @ to stop spam so substitute the @ for the AT.

I now use steve AT stevedgood.com as my primary email address. I am slowly getting everything updated but it is a pain to lose an address I have used for years.

If you forget the email address the easiest way to get it is to use the "Email Me" button on the blog. It directs all email to the correct address. Thanks.

Blockhead People for the kids.

Make up several of these quick Blockhead people and leave them blank. When the kids come over let then color the faces with magic markers. For younger children I recommend non-permanent magic markers or paint pens. The block is 2.5" X 3.5" X 1". I included patterns for the feet and arms. I didn't use the arms on Frank. I used axle pegs for Frank's bolts.

If you want to duplicate Frank I show all three views in the pattern so you can copy the drawing.
The magic marker tends to run a little on the wood. You might experiment with coating the wood with spray acrylic first then applying the magic marker.

Patriotic Horse Pull Toy Scroll Saw Pattern. The giveaway winners have been drawn. See if you won.

First let me point out a mistake so you don't do the same. I glued the left front leg in the wrong position. The front hoof that is off the ground should be much further forward. Follow the diagram in the pattern so you don't make the same mistake.

This toy is ornamental and not intended for small children to play with.

The project will require 3/4" thick wood for the body and 1/4" thick wood for the legs and tail. The dowel rod is 5/16" diameter. You can use chain or string for the pull. The chain is attached to the base with an eye screw. You will need four 1.25 inch wooden wheels and four axle pegs.

The image of the flag is included. It just wraps around the dowel and is glued in place. The flag will show on both sides.

Remember. A Memorial Day Scroll Saw Pattern.

Memorial day is the day that our nation remembers the men and women who gave their lives while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It's a day when we should all reflect on the cost of a free nation. What we have, however imperfect was paid for with the blood of our brothers, sisters, fathers and mothers. The cost of freedom is so high because it is the single most valuable thing we possess.

While you enjoy the picnics, parades or just a day off from work remember. Remember the wife who's husband never came home. Remember the baby who never got to meet her father. Remember the brothers and sisters who will spend the rest of their lives wishing their lost sibling could come home but never will. Remember the men and women who left their family to serve with honor and paid the ultimate price.

Although these are sad events you don't have to remember with sadness. Grieve their loss and remember their lives with the happiness they would want you to have. That's what they would want.

Have a happy Memorial day weekend. If you travel be safe.

Just a follow up to the giveaway I posted yesterday. There is still time to enter. If you missed the details just visit the blog and read yesterdays post. There were hundreds of entries today. Good luck to all of you.

I do want to point out again that if you did not follow the rules exactly you can not win. Many did not. Make sure you used the correct email address to enter. It was in the rules. Make sure you put the penny date in the email "subject field". Make sure you list which prize you want in the body of the email. It's okay to enter again if you made a mistake. I have deleted the illegal entries. If you want to can enter again as long as you don't enter more that once a day.

Hint: The date of the penny I am looking for is on a picture of an actual penny. It's not one of the penny patterns I have made in the past. You can find the penny on the first page of the blog. Don't make this hard. Just scroll down the page until you see it. There were several who had the wrong date.

Watch Franks demonstration video below for all the details of this neat product. It's a $30 value. It's the lifter I use on my DeWalt saw and I love it.

So those of you who don't own that model have a chance to get in on the giveaway I will send a $30 Amazon gift card to another lucky winner.

Here is how you enter to win.
First let me say this. Every giveaway I am disappointed to have to throw out entries. You have to follow the rules or you can't win. Don't miss out because you don't read on below.

Sorry but the giveaway is for US residents only. I promise that I will come up with something soon for all the other readers from around the world.

Community Forum Upgrade.

http://www.stevedgood.com/community/index.php
Click the image to visit the new forum.
Well tonight I finally upgraded the Community forum to version 2.0.7 The forum has been running on version 1.6.19 for some time and it was getting very buggy. The minor updates within 1.6 were no longer working and the database kept getting corrupted. In other words it was long overdue.

If you have not signed up for the Community forum now is a good time to check it out. There are hundreds of scrollers from all over the world there chatting about our favorite hobby. The moderator, Russ makes sure everything stays family friendly and is always there to welcome new members.

It's a great place to get your questions answered. There is even the Coffee Shop section where you can just chat about daily events or tell a joke. If you are a little shy then just browse for a while until you get comfortable. The link to the Community forum can always be found the the left column of the blog.

I hope the new look is not to jarring for the old timers. The old theme is not compatible with the new software so I had to change it up.  It's a more modern theme but the interface is close enough that I don't think it will cause you much trouble.

I'll probably be making tweaks for the next few days. If you have any comments just drop me an email.

Scroll Saw Inspirational Cross Pattern.

This inspirational cross is a little over 9 inches tall. The round base has the message cut around the diameter. "Jesus will show you the way.". The base has a small round over applied to the edge to give it a more finished look. Most of the challenge of this pattern is in the base. The letters are around 1/2 inch tall so if you take your time you should be fine. The next challenge is cutting the circle. Remember all the tips I have shown in the past when cutting circles. Here is a link to my "Cutting Circles on the Scroll Saw" tutorial. Take a look and see if you can pick up some helpful tips.

I cut this cross from Red Oak. Once again I remember why I am not a fan of Red Oak. As a matter of fact it is one of my least favorite scroll saw woods. It's fine for furniture but not for delicate fretwork. The open grain has a tendency to want to split on the back side of the cut. I used a #3 Flying Dutchman Ultra Reverse blade. This is the best blade I have found to reduce this splitting on the back but even it had some trouble. In this case I plan to cover the back of the base with felt so it will never be seen. The fret work on the cross is large enough that there was no significant splitting so it's fine. On projects that will have the back side visible I just stay away from Red Oak.

Another issue with Red Oak is that the end grain really soaks up any finish applied to it. On furniture it's easy to hide end grain but that's not the case with many scroll saw projects. To help prevent a rough end gran finish make sure you sand through all the grits in areas where you can. Sand to at least 220 grit. When I pick up a wood project I like to feel a silky smooth finish. It's tough to get that on Red Oak without using a sanding sealer before you finish the project. Did I mention I don't like Red Oak.

Band Saw Set Up Clinic by Alex Snodgrass of Carter Tools

If you do a lot of scroll saw projects you will quickly find that it can be hard to find thin boards. Most big box hardware stores only carry 4/4 lumber. and what they do carry is very expensive. If you are lucky enough to have a hardwood lumber store in your area they will charge a premium to dimension 4/4 lumber into thin boards if they will even do it at all. You can buy scroll saw ready boards online but again at a premium price.

If you are wanting to build out your workshop there is a tool that can pay for itself pretty quickly. A decent band saw along with a planner will allow you to rough re-saw 4/4 stock into rough thin boards. Then the planner is used to thickness the board to final dimension.

Setting up and using a planner is pretty simple. Setting up a band saw is often a challenge for a novice. The video with this post is by Alex Snodgrass of Carter tools.  He gives the best advice on setting up a band saw I have found.

I realize there are a lot of scrollers who cannot afford the space or money for this kind of setup. I understand that. If you are a serious scroller and want to save money in the long run then expanding your workshop might be something you want to look at. The most common email I get is "where can I find cheap thin stock for my scroll saw?" Unfortunately I don't have an answer to that. Wood is not cheap. The best way I have found to save money on wood is to invest in the tools that allow me to get the most value out of the wood I buy.

Les Fixed it!

-

A few days ago I posted an alphabet tray puzzle. I knew when I put it up I was not satisfied with it and I figured you guys would be able to tell me what was wrong with it. Today I received an email with the above picture form Les Hoste. He fixed the pattern by removing the pips and enlarging it 140 percent. Actually several of you recommended removing the pips.He did overlook one problem but I think I have that fixed now also. The Y and Z in the original were smaller than the other letters.

Tonight I completed the second and hopefully better version of the tray puzzle. I removed the pips and corrected the Y and Z. One thing I did not change was the size. I like to keep all my patterns printable on 8.5 X 11 paper. Sometimes I break them up over multiple sheets but that was confusing in this case. If you want it bigger which I think is a good idea you can have it enlarged on a copier onto 11 X 17 inch paper. You could also use the RapidResizer utility by Patrick Roberts available on my blog.

I think this pattern is now easy enough that children learning their ABC's could get something from it. Of course having the parent help with the puzzle is probably a good idea.

Thanks to all who helped with this pattern especially Les for sharing the picture.
