After you enter the contest take a while to visit Sue's site www.scrollsawartist.com.  Once again she is offering some beautiful and special patterns. Her Christmas trees have been a huge hit just as I predicted. If you did not have time to buy this pattern yet jump at the opportunity right now. When you cut this pattern you will be making a piece of art that will be handed down in your family for generations to come. Just imagine your Great, Great, Great Grandchild finding this Christmas Tree and reading your name on the back and the date 2014. The feeling of connection through the generations will be special.

Below are the most popular patterns shown during October - they were added to Holidays>Christmas. Many subscribers liked the Large Nativity tree shown before and asked for another pattern featuring a Santa, sleigh etc. Use 1/8" (3mm) birch ply or similar and make the inside cuts. Attach the overlay piece to thicker wood of a darker color with pieces of double-sided tape, then cut the perimeter line through both layers. Detach and sand the pieces by hand before gluing the overlay on top of the backer. The image on the right shows the reverse, with the design cut from dark wood. The most difficult part of cutting a project like this one is managing the size of the work piece around the saw blade. Most people will utilize spiral blades to make cutting easier.

My Nativity wreaths depict the birth of Jesus and the first one is more elaborate than the second. Cut the wreaths directly in hardwood, or use 1/8" (3mm) birch ply for the design, attached to a thicker wood backer. For a lighted version: Drill some holes in the backer in strategic positions and fit a string of 10 fairy lights to the back, to allow the lights to shine through some of the fret cuts.

This set of relief-cut trees was added to the section Holidays>Christmas>Trees. Five of the trees consist of four pieces each, while the other three each have three work pieces. Wood thickness for each layer is 1 1/2" (38mm). I used Jelutong (similar to Basswood), which not only makes cutting this thickness a breeze, but is also easy to sand by hand. Each section is cut at a particular tilt angle in order to achieve the desired effect. A base pattern is also included and is made from 1/2" to 5/8" (12mm to 16mm) wood. A piece of 1/4" (6mm) diameter dowel is used to join the tree to the base. Detailed instructions are included.
