All I want for Christmas Scroll Saw Pattern.

http://www.stevedgood.com/estore/estore.html
This is a Christmas wish scroll. Family makes the holidays better. I hope you can be with your family on Christmas.

I received several emails about my post a couple days ago on "Tips on Scroll Saw Blades". Most of them just let me know they appreciated the info. A few pointed out even more tips. Here is one from Ron O. All the blades Ron mentions are great blades so I thought I would share his email

Hello Steve

You were spot on with your comments on blade selection.

I have never seen the need for anything larger than a #5. I guess the biggest advantage to using larger blades is reduction of the possibility for breakage.  Generally teeth counts are similar ,so you end up plowing a wider Kerf with a larger blade, hopefully with blade intact.

This year I cut about 60 compound ornaments using 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 poplar.  I used a #5 Pegas modified geometry blade.  A blade would last for 2 or possibly 3 ornaments.  I never broke a single blade.  At one point I cut an ornament with a Pegas #3.  It worked just fine.  As you pointed out ...slow down and let the blade do the job.

Part of my success is obviously the fantastic Pegas blade.  In my intarsia work, using very hard woods, I also use the Olson #5 PGT blades.  Another fine blade for wordart etc. Is the FD ultra reverse blade.  Again, nothing larger than a #5.

Thanks for all you do for the scrollsaw community.

Ron O.

Christmas Winder Scene Fretwork Scroll Saw Pattern.

http://www.stevedgood.com/estore/estore.html
This Christmas winter scene wall hanging is 12" tall and 10" wide. I used maple and walnut scroll saw blanks from Heritage Wood to cut this fretwork. Their glued up boards were perfect for this large project. I used the 12" X 16" boards. They do a good job of color matching the glue ups so it's hard to tell these are not just wide boards.

There are enough cuts on this piece to keep you busy for a while. It took me about three hours to cut the fretwork. I finished it with spray acrylic. I'll use a saw tooth hanger from Bear Woods to hang it on the wall. See how I shamelessly mentioned two sponsors for this one project. Capitalism at it's finest.

Well I'm about to hit a milestone in my life. On December 1st, I will be 60 years old. There are certain birthdays that seem to stand out more than others. 16, 21, 50 and 60 seem to be transition years. When I was much younger I would have told you that 60 was ancient. Now that I'm here it don't seem so old. :)

I bring this up because I recently had a conversation with a reader about how important it is to have something in your life that you are passionate about. For some it's fishing or golf. For me it's making things. I am a very happy camper when I'm in my shop working on a project or sitting at the computer designing a pattern.

No age seems old when you can wake up each morning looking forward to the day. A hobby can be one part of your life that can keep you active both physically and mentally.

I am a big believer that a hobby can help keep you fulfilled and happier. Even when work is tough or other parts of our lives are not going well you can always retreat to your hobby and find a few minutes to be happy.

I have quite a few orders in the queue right now. I'll spend some extra time getting caught back up today.

November is quickly coming to an end. That means you better get your entry in so you have a chance to win the Bear Woods giveaway.

This is a picture of the Heritage Woods scroll saw blanks that I used for today's project.
If you need wide boards for your project there are very well made.

A Hug For You Scroll Saw Pattern

http://www.stevedgood.com/estore/estore.html
Sometimes a friend or loved one just needs a hug.

Tips on Scroll Saw Blades:

A common misconception about choosing which scroll saw blade to use is the "It's this tick so I need this size blade.". While larger blades will cut thicker wood faster, that may not be what is needed. It is perfectly acceptable to use a small blade like a #3 to cut thick wood(3/4" etc.).

You may need the smaller blade because the pattern has intricate cuts. You may want to be able to make tighter turns. In those cases a smaller blade will give the best results. Don't go smaller than what is needed for the pattern.

You will have to use proper technique when cutting thick wood with a smaller blade. You will have to slow your feed rate. Remember to let the blade have time to remove the wood dust from the kerf. If you go too fast you are going to break the blade or have a poor cut.

When using a small blade with thick wood there is a tendency for the blade to warp in the cut. When this happens the edges of your cut will be warped. You will often have trouble pulling the pieces apart because they are wedged together.

While you are cutting you need to pay close attention to the stress you are putting on the blade. Be careful not to put side pressure against the blade. Every few seconds slightly release your grip on the board and let it recenter. Warping is often a sign that you are going too fast for the blade/wood.

There are times when this is a very difficult technique. Very dense wood can make using smaller blades tricky. It's often a trade off of one issue for another when choosing the best blade. There is no chart that can tell you exactly which blade to use for a project. There is no substitute for experience. You get experience by trying new things. You learn failures and successes.

If you want to try a superior scroll saw blade then I suggest giving the Pegas blades a trial.
I use Pegas blades for a reason. Better blades make for a better and more accurate cut.
I have used just about every blade on the market and the Pegas brand is what I settled on.
