Hello Steve
You were spot on with your comments on blade selection.
I have never seen the need for anything larger than a #5. I guess the biggest advantage to using larger blades is reduction of the possibility for breakage. Generally teeth counts are similar ,so you end up plowing a wider Kerf with a larger blade, hopefully with blade intact.
This year I cut about 60 compound ornaments using 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 poplar. I used a #5 Pegas modified geometry blade. A blade would last for 2 or possibly 3 ornaments. I never broke a single blade. At one point I cut an ornament with a Pegas #3. It worked just fine. As you pointed out ...slow down and let the blade do the job.
Part of my success is obviously the fantastic Pegas blade. In my intarsia work, using very hard woods, I also use the Olson #5 PGT blades. Another fine blade for wordart etc. Is the FD ultra reverse blade. Again, nothing larger than a #5.
