Horse Art Scroll Saw Pattern.



This simple horse pattern is ten inches long and five inches tall. I have been receiving email lately asking for simpler patterns that can be cut from 3/4" thick boards. I kept this very basic. I used just enough veining to add some detail. There are only ten interior cuts.


Cutting Cupped and Twisted Boards:


In a perfect world, we would only cut flat and straight boards. Sometimes we may not have the option to flatten the board or we may not realize it is cupped or twisted before we begin cutting. When you have the option you should flatten the board first with a jointer or hand plane.

Twisted or cupped boards are difficult to cut. Even a small amount of cupping or twisting will cause the board to vibrate on the scroll saw table. If you don't notice the board is not flat you may assume the saw is just vibrating. Always check the board for flatness.

So, what do you do if the board is not flat?  All you have to do is choke up on the blade. Look at the picture above. Notice that I have both index fingers close to the blade. I am applying downward pressure as close to the blade as possible. 

Correct

You want to apply downward pressure to the board so it is in contact with the table where the blade goes through the board.  

Incorrect. This will vibrate badly.
