Liberty(noun): The state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one's way of life, behavior, or political views.
We cannot take liberty or freedom for granted. Liberty and rule of law are a balancing act. You always want the finger on the side of liberty but not to the point of lawlessness. The scale is constantly tipping one way or the other. Our governmental system of checks and balances is designed to keep the scale balanced. Sometimes it tips too far in one direction.
We the people. The citizens of the U.S. are the ultimate caretakes of liberty. Democracy is a system of government by the whole population or all eligible members, typically through elected representatives. That simply means it is our responsibility to hold the government accountable for their actions. As an individual, you do that by voting and taking part in civil debate.
On this 4th of July take time to celebrate and reflect on liberty and your role in keeping America liberated from tyranny and free from oppression. Just remember that civil debate and respect for opposing views is critical to advancing democracy. It is not always easy but we can disagree and be civil at the same time.
