Women Wood Crafters: Cy's Corner
The scroll saw community is lucky to have such a large percentage of women crafters. I don't have numbers to back this up but I am sure we have a larger percentage of women than other woodworking niches.
Women often bring a different perspective and aesthetic to the craft. Many of the best pattern designers are women. I am generalizing here a bit but men often make projects for the challenge. Women are more interested in the beauty and how nice of a gift the project will make. I'm sorry if that is a bias but it is just my observation.
Women absolutely make the majority of craft purchases. If you are going to do a craft show you better have some projects that appeal to women or you will lose sales.
My email is about 30 to 40 percent from women scrollers. I'm not sure that equates to the percentage of women scrollers or the percentage that send email. Either way, it is a significant number.
The video above is from Cy's Corner YouTube channel. She has dozens of videos going back for five years. Her projects are varied but she does quite a bit of intarsia. Cy also has a web page at this link where you can see her work and get to know her better.
I wanted to highlight Cy because I feel she as strong crafters passion. She obviously loves what she does and is very skilled. It would be great to see her videos inspire more women to become active in sharing their work and talents on YouTube.
She has a video where she tells the Christmas story as she cuts a Joseph, Mary and Jesus intarsia pattern. It shows her skill with intarsia and allows you to understand some of who she is. It's quite nice. She also shows that you don't have to follow the pattern exactly. She makes on the fly changes so that the project fits her style. Like I said, she is talented.
