Snack Tray Scroll Saw Pattern.

Download Below

These snack trays are 8" X 10". They are cut from 1/4" thick Baltic birch plywood. Using BB ply makes these trays inexpensive to make. As you can see above there are four design options. Another option would be to use Inkscape to delete the "SNACK TRAY" letters and replace them with the name of the person who will use it.

Many of the projects we make on the scroll saw are art pieces. Sometimes it's fun to make some useful projects. They don't have to be complex to be useful and these are certainly not complicated to make.

After cutting the parts and gluing them together you want to do a good sanding job. The finished tray needs to feel good in the hand. Sand everything smooth and break all the sharp edges.

I wanted a round over on the bottom of the tray. You could sand it but it is much quicker if you have a router, I installed a 1/4" round-over bit and that gave the bottom a nice feel in the hand.

We are going to put food on this tray so let's talk about the finish. This tray will not be dishwasher safe so we need to give it a good finish so we can wipe it clean with a damp paper towel.

Food safe finish. This is always a topic of concern. The truth is that all modern finishes are food safe once they are cured. Cured is different from dried. I used spray acrylic and it dries in minutes but it takes a few days to cure. Just let it sit for a week and it will be fine.

I needed a heavy finish to make it easy to clean and be less susceptible to moisture. I applied
several coats of spray acrylic. After every coat, I buffed it with 000 steel wool. This gave a very smooth and heavy finish. You can't see it in the picture but it is high gloss.

Compound Cut Name Patterns. $5

Order Your Pattern

It has been a while since I advertised these 3D compound cut name patterns. When you give one of these to a friend they will not have any idea how you made it. They always get looks of wonder. The complete instructions are included with the pattern.

You will need a blank that is 1.5" X 1.5" X length. The length is normally 7" but for short names, I may make the pattern shorter. I normally use construction grade 2X4's and cut them to size.

You can use any two words. First name/last name. Boyfriend/girlfriend. Husband/wife. Just remember that if you use something like " I BELIEVE" as your two words the pattern will look very odd because one side has many more letters than the other. Something like "BOB ROBINSON" does work okay because I stretch out the BOB side.
