If you own the DeWalt DW788 or the Delta 40-694 then you are very likely to see the problem I am about to talk about. I also want to tell you about a solution that many scrollers swear by.
It the photo above you are looking at the front of the top blade clamp of a DeWalt DW788 scroll saw. If you look very closely at the two set screws you will see that they do not meet flush. There is a small gap at the top. The only contact is at the bottom.
This condition will drive you crazy with slipping blades.
Here is what causes this problem. When a scroll saw blade slips out of the clamp we tend to try to tighten the thumbscrew tighter. Sometimes we add an extra knob or dial to the thumbscrew to make it easier on our old hands. Both of these have the potential to bend the clamp so the thumbscrew and set screw no longer meet flush.
This can be very tricky to troubleshoot if you don't know about the problem. The only good solution is to replace the clamps.
As a side note, do not be tempted to overtighten the thumbscrew. You only need moderate force to keep the blade in place if the thumbscrew and set screw are not worn. If you use an extra lever or knob on the thumbscrew you have to be extra careful because you can exert torque on the thumbscrew.
Solution:
Like I said you need to replace the heads for both the upper and lower arms. You can order the stock heads to repair the problem but they will eventually bend again if you are not very careful
A better solution is to replace the heads with the Pegas Chuck Head kits. These kits will cost you a few more bucks but from my experience, they are much more difficult to bend. I intentionally tried to bend a set and could not do it with just my fingers. They are built pretty well.
This kit is worth the price just for the above problem. Pegas also says that the clamps are lighter. This reduction in weight will improve vibration and the wear of the bearing. You also ket new thumbscrews and set screws. These items wear out also so they need to be replaced from time to time. This just adds to the value.
