"Thy Will Be Done" Cross Scroll Saw Pattern.

This three-layer plaque is eight inches wide. I wanted to keep this a simple pattern without much ornamentation. The lettering is fairly small so just take your time with that part.

IMPORTANT: This is not a perfect science. This chart will just get you close. Sorting scroll saw blades are not the most important job but I thought I would see if I could make it easier. Just in case you have the urge to organize.

It is easy to end up with several scroll saw blades all mixed up of different sizes. I received an email today asking how to get them sorted back to similar sizes. I had to think about it for a while but maybe this chart will help. With a brand size chart, micrometer, and magnifying glass it would be more accurate but who wants to go to all that trouble for a few cents worth of blades? For some job, close is close enough.

I have been a scroller for so long that I can identify the standard blade sizes just by touch. Maybe I'm fooling myself but I think I would get most of them correct. I have touched scroll saw blades almost every day for thirteen years. Before that was another 15 years of casual scrolling. 

If you only use a scroll saw occasionally. If you have poor sensitivity in your fingers. If you have limited vision then it may be difficult to sort them out. 

When you print out the chart pages, be certain that the print dialog is set to "Print Actual Size". If it is set to "Print to Fit" the chart will print at the incorrect size.

I included four charts. All size blades and just standard size blades. I also included both

charts in black and red. Some low vision folks see red better. 

 

This is the #9 blade chart. A #5 blade on the #9 chart is pretty easy to see the difference.

 

This is a photo of the #5 and #7 swapped on the chart. It gets tougher but with care, you can see the difference.

The next two photos are the correct blades on the correct chart. 

 

I don't know how useful this is but I wanted to see if I could find a solution for the reader who asked the question. If you have a better, simple solution please pass it along.

Happiness is Homemade Scroll Saw Pattern

Patty and I both worked a lot of hours before we retired. She was a director at a local hospital and I was an on-call tech. Because of the late hours we got in the habit of eating out a lot. After we retired we still maintained that habit until the pandemic hit. We probably ate out ten plus times a week.

For the last year, we have eaten 99% of our meals at home. We both learned a very good lesson. Fast food makes us sick. Eliminating fast food almost instantly cured problems for both of us. I won't ruin your day with the details. The two or three times we have had fast food delivered in the last year did not go well. 

Now I have to admit that I still love a good Wendy's hamburger but it needs to be a treat and not a diet.

I'm sure that some of this is just us getting older but whatever it is I like feeling better more than I like Micky D's. :)

I'm not a very good cook but I am getting better. It's difficult to call what I cook homemade but it is made at home. Our diet still has a lot of flaws with too much sugar and calories but it is improving. 

Today's pattern came out of my giving thought to how we have changed our diet. It's difficult for me to say that anything positive has come from the pandemic but the food we eat is one positive for Patty and me.

Scrollsaw Blade Numbering System?

This will not be an in-depth discussion of scroll saw blades. I just want to answer a question that I have received a few times lately. There are a lot of new scroll saw folks out there right now. They got saws for Christmas and are looking for basic information.

Scroll saw blades use a numbering system to designate the size of the blade. #2/0, #1, #3, #5, #7, #9, and #12 are the more common sizes you will see. The smaller the number the smaller the blade.

The sweet spot range for most scroll saw projects is #3, #5, and #7.  This will not be true for everyone but as a general rule, these are the blades that will cut most patterns.

Blades that have fewer teeth per inch will cut more aggressively and faster. Blades with more teeth per inch will cut more accurately and slower. 

Some people will tell you to choose a blade for a project based on how thick and dense the wood you are cutting is. It is true that the #9 blade will cut 1" thick hard maple more efficiently than a #5 blade. The problem is that you may need a #5 blade to make the cut needed by the pattern. It's always a trade-off between efficiency and accuracy. I choose my blade based on the pattern and the wood.

I'm not going to discuss the different types of blades because it gets so long that everyone stops reading or falls asleep. I'll talk about the types of blades later.

CREATE YOUR OWN SIGN

This pattern is designed for you to make your own flying sign. There are a few premade signs in the pattern but if you make your own it will be more fun.

Support your favorite sports team, Fly your political message, Use it for a business, or just personalize it with a name.

You will need a stencil font. Here is a link to dafont that shows their stencil fonts. Just scroll down until you find one you like. Us a word processer to select the font after it is installed. You will have to play with the size. You have approximately 8.5" for the length. If you know how to use the free vector graphics program, Inkscape this will be easy. https:www.inkscape.org

The plane is cut from 1/8" and 1/4" Baltic birch plywood. The small pattern will be ~18" long.

I also included the pattern at 200%. It will make a model that is ~36" long. This model will be better for hanging from a ceiling. You can use 1/2" and 1/4" plywood for the larger pattern.

 

Back Side Tear Out of the Cut:

 

When you make a cut with a scroll saw blade there is almost always some tear-out on the backside. Sometimes this can take quite a bit of effort to sand away. Using reverse tooth blades will minimize the problem but not eliminate it.

Some plywood will tear-out worse than others. If you run into bad plywood and just can't get the back looking good then try this trick.

I always use blue painter's tape on the front of the wood. I then glue the pattern on top of the blue tape. This makes the pattern very easy to remove. Another advantage is that the glue on the tape lubricates the blade and prevents friction scorching the wood.

You can also use the tape on the back side to reduce the tear-out even more.

This is the front of the plywood. I put tape on the front for both cuts.

 

This is the back of the plywood. I only put tape on the back of one of the cuts.

I only use this technique on rare occasions. I normally just use a mop sander you get rid of the backside fuzzies. This works but the back will almost never look as good as the front. Sometimes the plywood is just poor quality and the tear-out is really bad.

I just keep this trick in mind for the time I want the back to look as good as possible.
