This is a small jewelry box with a tray. The project is cut from 1/4" sweetgum wood. This is the first time I have cut sweetgum wood but I like the way it cuts. I used walnut for the tray just to add a little contrast. I still have not made up my mind if I like the two species of wood together.
The fretwork on the lid has some fairly small interior cuts. You will need a 1/16" drill bit to drill a few of the holes. I used a #3 blade for all the cuts.
The box uses a built-in hinge. If you look closely you will see that I rounded over the hinges so they fit into the hinge holes accurately.
The tray sits on two, tray supports glued into the box.
There is a technique in woodworking that I call "Cut to fit". When you are cutting parts of a project with several pieces you may need to adjust the size of the parts slightly as you go.
The thickness of the wood may not be exactly as called for in the pattern. You may have small errors in early cuts that throw off the size of later cut parts.
This project is an example of this technique. The tray needs to sit on the tray supports and be easy to lift out. Once to start cutting the tray test fit as you go. Adjust the pieces as necessary for a good fit.
In my case, I completed the tray and it was just a bit too snug. I simply took the tray to my disk sander and took a few hundredths off each side. That gage me the perfect fit.

I had the pleasure to spend some time with the Tri Country Scrollers during their last meeting. They are currently having virtual meetings and they invited me to set in with them. We kept it casual and just discussed the state of the scroll saw hobby.
I told them when we started that they would have to shut me up when they were ready to go home. I don't think they believed me until a couple of hours had passed and I was still going.
