This kitchen sign pattern comes in two sizes. The small sign is 10" long and the large sign is 13" long.
The pattern has three layers, each 1/4" thick. That is completely optional. You can just use the main layer if you like and make it thicker.
I sit and Stand at the Scroll Saw:
A question I get from time to time is if it is better to stand and scroll or sit and scroll. This discussion usually leads to how high the scroll saw stand should be and/or how high the stool needs to be.
I sit most of the time while cutting. I do have some projects where I need to stand. If the board is large and has a large rotation, I will stand so I can position myself further or closer to the table as needed. I need to get my belly out of the way when the board hangs further off the front of the table. This is easier for me when standing.
This is not medical advice. For me, I have found that when I am sitting, I want my elbows to be just below the surface of the table. I want the rear of the saw higher than the front by a couple of inches. That is the position I feel the most comfortable and my lower back pain does not happen as often when I am in this position. I elevate the back of the saw so I don't have to lean forward to see the pattern line.
When I do stand to cut my elbows are a little higher. This is mostly due to the fact that I use the manufacturer's stands that are sold for the saws and I am a bit taller than average. My elbows end up about three inches above the table. I'm not sure how this posture would affect my back pain because I never stand and cut for long periods of time. It would be rare for me to stand and cut for more than an hour. I often sit and scroll for several hours with limited breaks.
Below is a picture I found online that shows proper posture for seated and standing at a work desk. I assume this would hold true for working at the scroll saw. In our case, the table of our scroll saw does not change height like they show in this picture. That is why I use a tall stool to elevate my body so my elbows are in the correct position.
One experiment I have on my to-do list is to buy one of the motor-driven standing desks. I want to put a scroll saw on it and see how comfortable this makes different postures. The one in the photo below says it will support 154lbs. That will handle the scroll saw's weight but I'm not sure if it will handle the vibration and keep the saw steady.
This table is 48" X 30" and can elevate from 28" to 47.6" in height. It's not inexpensive at $250 but if back or leg pain is a problem then it may be worth the investment. I think you could also get at least two scroll saws mounted on this table, Maybe a sanding station. Sanding is another activity that can take extended time and it helps to be comfortable.
