Candle Wreath Scroll Saw Pattern.

This candle wreath is three layers thick. I designed this pattern specifically to test new material. I'll explain below what I used.

MDF Veneer

One of my sponsors sent me this MDF veneer to test with the scroll saw. As the name implies and the photo above shows, the MDF veneer has an MDF core covered front and back with a hardwood veneer.

I was not sure how much back-side splintering I would get when I cut the MDF veneer on the scroll saw. I was also interested in how the edges would finish with a spray acrylic or lacquer.

The photo above shows the completed layers after a light sanding and spray finish. As you can see the veneer sheets held up well with little back-side tear out. The edges are clearly not wood but for some projects, I think it looks good enough. Choosing between this MDF veneer and Baltic birch plywood would be the competition. I have not decided on which I would prefer.

I am early in this test because I don't have a cost of material yet. The vendor did say he was not interested in selling this by the single small sheets. He prefers to sell it in 10 or 20 SF packs.

My immediate thought was that this might be a nice alternative for Christmas ornaments. As I get more information and do a bit more testing I'll pass on more information.

If you have used this material before and want to share your thoughts just email me.
