I usually whip up patterns like the Dragon Slayer in an hour or two, but this time it took me twice as long. I kept going back to tweak it because I really liked how it was turning out. It might not have broad appeal, but hey, that's the case with a lot of my patterns. I think this one ranks in my personal top ten of all the designs I've made.

When I mention the broad appeal of a pattern I am not talking about how good or bad the pattern is. I am speaking about how many people would be interested in the topic of the pattern. Some subjects are just not as popular as others. In today's patterns, if you do not have a tennis player in your family then you are probably not interested in that pattern.

I am able to release patterns that do not have broad appeal because I am not considering if they will sell or not. My patterns are donationware so they don't need to be salable. I also release a pattern nearly daily so people know that if they are not interested in today's pattern there will be another tomorrow. That is enough to keep most people coming back. My blog only earns money if I keep large numbers of people coming back. I send out half a million newsletters a month to subscribers so it is working out so far.

I do have some conditions though. The pattern needs to have enough interest that it will get some downloads. I monitor the first days' downloads and am looking for a minimum of 800 day-one downloads. If it gets less than 800 I tend to eliminate that subject from future patterns. Luckily that is rare now that I have done this for so many years. I stopped counting total downloads a few years ago but it is in the millions. Thank you.

The Tennis Plaques are 10.25" tall and cut from 1/4" thick wood. There is a male and female version. High School tennis season is not that far off and this would make a nice gift for the future tennis star in your family.
