Mother Scroll Saw Pattern

This pattern celebrates new mothers. Patty and I have a niece who is a twin and she is just about ready to have a set of twins. She may deliver this week. It is always exciting when a newborn comes into the family. That event and the soon-to-come Mother's Day prompted this pattern.

As I was designing this pattern I thought about how the role of women has changed since I was born in the 1950s. The percentage of women in the commercial workforce has doubled since the 1950s. Women still manage most of the children's schedules/activities. I can't speak to if that makes their role harder but it certainly makes it more complicated.

A 2020 study found that women spend 5.7 hours on housework and looking after children and elders daily, while men in the same age range spend 3.6 hours.

In 2022, 67.9 percent of men ages 25 and older were employed, compared with 55.4 percent of women. While men have higher employment-population ratios than women at every level of educational attainment, the gap between men and women becomes smaller as educational attainment increases.

According to a 2022 survey, full-time men work 8.3 hours per day on average, while full-time women work 7.8 hours per day. However, women are more likely to work part-time. Women earn 16% less on average than men. This is the smallest gap since statistics have been tracked.

If you add this up, men work outside the house and at home 11.9 hours per day. Women work 13.5 hours a day. These totals do not reflect so many factors that I am not sure what they mean but it does show that women, generally, have fewer hours in their day for themselves.

I am not trying to imply anything from these statistics. I am simply stating that women, especially mothers, are the glue that holds most families together. This is something to remember this upcoming Mother’s Day.

This pattern is 9.5" tall. The pattern calls for 1/2" thick wood but you can easily change that if needed. I think this would be a nice gift for those first-time mothers.
