I received quite a few emails from Vietnam veterans yesterday. They wanted to share their experiences and give thanks for yesterday's pattern. I will try to answer as many as possible, but it will take a while.

Because I heard from so many vets I wanted to do another pattern for them. This one is lighthearted but it's funny to me and shows what I think about these gentlemen and women. They are obviously a tough bunch of folks to have achieved what they have.

Let me say that I hope the ribbon on the plaque is what my research says it is. If not, sorry for the error. My research said it is a Campaign Metal Ribbon. Received by those who served in the years 1961 through 1973. It seemed generic so I thought I could use it.

The plaque is 8" in diameter. Three layers of 1/4" thick wood. This will not be an easy pattern to cut. There are a lot of interior cuts with the letters. You can want to cheat cut some of the letter if the cuts get too close together. The G is an example. Shorten the top of the cross line to make the gap wider. You can do the same with the S.

The cross with Jesus is an easier pattern. There are a couple of small interior cuts but the rest are not too difficult. The cross on the base is over 11" tall. It is cut from 1/4" and 1/2" wood but you could substitute 1/4" for all the parts if needed.

Tornadoes!

We like to go to the movies on a weekday to avoid the crowds. Yesterday we went and saw Twister. It is one of those movie genres that you either like or don't. Patty is not a big fan but I generally like them. Patty, her sister, and I went early and it was almost an empty house. So did we like the movie?

I thought the early part of the movie was just okay. After the early part, I liked it a lot better. The special effects are generally the best part of these movies and this one did not let down with those effects. They were excellent, especially the final scene. The neat thing is that the plot, while predictable was not terrible.

Patty's sister liked the movie as well. She thought the beginning was good so she liked it a little better than me. Patty did not hate the movie but it was just not the type of movie she goes for.

If this is your type of movie then it is worth the trip.

The subject of the movie intrigued me so when I got home I decided to study tornadoes a little. We have recently had several small tornadoes around here so it has my interest. After my brief study, I used my recent programming spree to write a tornado simulation. It is not extremely scientific but does show the potential power and destruction of the EF0 through EF5 tornadoes.
