Very creative scrolled lamp shade by Dick Osterhout.

This cute little lamp was sent to me from Dick Osterhout. He made the lamp from my bowl pattern shown below. It sure makes a better lamp shade than a bowl. The bowl pattern is linked below if you want to give it a try.

Dick used a low wattage nightlight bulb. He says the light shining through the shade makes a nice pattern. Looks like he turned the lamp post on a lathe but it would not be too hard to come up with an alternative if you don't have a lathe. Notice how he kept the design going in the base.

Thanks Dick. This is a very cool idea.

The Catalog DVD's are still going out on schedule. I have been tracking the orders and it looks like it's taking 7 to 10 days for most of the orders to be delivered.

Scroll Saw Picture Frame.

This wedding picture frame holds a 4 X 6 photograph in the portrait orientation.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas. My family and I enjoyed a nice Christmas dinner made by my daughter. She is an exceptional cook. We exchanged gifts on Christmas eve then traveled back to Indiana Christmas day to be with my in-laws.

We were able to go pick up our new puppy from the breeder a couple days ago and she has been a bundle of joy for my wife and I. Holy is eight weeks old and full of mischief. She is a multipoo, mostly white with black patches over her eyes. I would guess she will have us completely trained in a few more days.

2012 is almost behind us and it's been another fun year here on the blog. I made 270 posts for the year. That's a few short of 2011 but still not bad. So far this year there have been 1,257,914 page loads of the blog. That's up from 2011 when I had 1,240,871 page loads. We are approaching 5 million page loads since the blog opened.

There are 13,978 subscribers to the newsletter. I would like to see that number grow a lot in 2013. If you have friends who might be interested in the hobby send them our way.

We have over 3000 members in the online community forum. Of course many of those are not very active but the ones who are keep things interesting. We average 117 posts per day to the forum. The person who currently hold the top spot for being in the forum has 62 days, 11 hours and 51 minutes. If you have not registered, give it a try. There are a lot of nice people who share the same hobby. Russ is the moderator and keeps things family friendly.

I have lost track of the number of patterns that have been downloaded but it in the millions. This month set a record with 176,028 patterns downloaded. One pattern had over 34,000 downloads this month. I think that's a record also but like I said I have kind of lost track.

I want to thank all of you who visit the blog and make it fun for this old man to enjoy his hobby. I have a passion for the hobby and the people in it. My goals for the blog remain the same as they were on day one. I want to bring as many people into the hobby as I can. I want to give those people a place to visit and feel a part of the community. I want to build the largest scroll saw pattern catalog in the world.

I want to wish everyone around the world a very Merry Christmas. I hope all your holiday wishes come true.

Here is a special treat from Russ Claridy. Russ was feeling especially creative today and whipped up this little scrollers Christmas Carol. It is sang to the tune of Up on the Housetop. Click the play button on the embedded player and sing along. You may not see the player if you are reading this in the email newsletter. If that's the case either wing it or visit the blog for today's post. Thanks Russ I think it's wonderful.

I'm out to my workshop, off I go
Making gifts, feel like Santa ho, ho

Pattern in hand, I just need some glue
I wish you could see what I am making for you

Ho, ho, ho, no one knows
Ho, ho, ho, no one knows

Out to my workshop, hiding is the trick
It's so much fun helping ole Saint Nick

Chosing the wood, is hard you see
Must be cut from a special tree

For the gift, it must have that special look
So you can enjoy all the time it took

Ho, ho, ho no one knows
Ho, ho, ho no one knows

Out to my workshop, hiding is the trick
It's so much fun helping ole Saint Nick

Now to the scrollsaw saw, saw, saw
Must sand and finish not one little flaw

Can't wait to see your eyes all a glow
The smile on your face when you finally know

Ho, ho, ho no one knows
Ho, ho, ho no one knows

Soooo out to my workshop, hiding is the trick
It's so much fun helping ole Saint Nick
This mantel clock requires a 2 3/4" Clock insert with a 2 3/8" mounting hole.

Snowflakes for Sandy Hook. Deadline.

I know everyone was shocked by the tragic events that took place in Newtown, Connecticut last week. Here is a way to tell the students, teachers, employees and administrators of Sandy Hook Elementary school how much we care. I'm sure many of you know that the students will be returning to class in a new school. The Connecticut PTSA met with the PTA of Sandy Hook, town officials and have been asked to spearhead the following effort.

They want the students to return to a winter wonderland. They are asking volunteers to make snowflakes. You can make your own design or use the one I designed. They can be cut from any material. This is a natural project for the scrolling community to get involved in.  It comes from a source you can trust. It would be nice if they could receive enough wooden snowflakes that they could give one to each student.

If you would like to see the other efforts of the PTSA here is the link to their website.

The snowflakes have to be delivered by January 12th, 2013.
Send your snowflake to:

Connecticut PTSA
60 Connolly Parkway
Building 12 Suite 103
Hamden, CT  06514

Last minute stocking Stuffers.

I received this note from Cynthia over at ToyMakingPlans.com. These would make cool little stocking stuffers and she share a tip to two tone the cars. You can find the pattern on her website.
TOYMAKER’S QUICK AND EASY HOME KITCHEN WOOD-TINTING FORMULA STERILIZES THE WOOD AND IT’S NON-TOXIC!
Obtain any color tint desired on any wood without staining! It’s all done in your kitchen oven.
Step1: Cut out the automobile into two pieces per the pattern from common white wood.
Step 2: Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit or 200 degrees Celsius.
Step 2: Place the parts to be tinted on a cookie sheet and place in the oven. The dark tone requires one hour in the oven. The medium tone requires 1/2 hour in the oven. For darker tones increase the oven time. For lighter tones decrease the oven time.
Step 3: Remove tinted parts from oven and let cool until warm to the touch.
Step 4: Apply Cynthia’s Paste Wax Finish. The easy-to-make homemade formula is on our website at toymakingplans.com

Yes!

Yes. I believe, I can, I will! The phrase on this motivational desk trophy just might give you the confidence to take the next step. We all need a little confidence booster from time to time. Making something difficult happen is sometime just having the confidence to take the first step.

Orders for the Catalog DVD are being shipped out in pretty good time. It's taking the distributor between 24 and 48 hours from receiving the order to shipping. I would say 80 percent are already shipped. They estimate that USPS first class mail will get it there withing 5 to 7 days. Of course those shipping outside the U.S. are going Air Mail and might take a bit longer.

If you still wish to place an order here is the order page. PLACE AN ORDER

On a different note I want to pass along some information. I get a lot of email asking me to resend one of the email newsletters. I don't have that option. I don't send out the newsletter. It is handled by Feedburner. Anytime you misplace or lose one of the newsletters all you have to do is visit the blog. The newsletter is just a copy of the daily post. Everything you ever have received in the newsletter is still available there. All the patterns are in the online catalog. All the videos are there as well as every post since May of 2007.  There is a search bar at the top of the blog to search for keywords. The catalog, video channel and more are linked in the left hand column. I often won't be able to answer those emails so I wanted you to know it's all there. If you have trouble finding it then email me and I can usually help. Another great resource is the Community forum. There are many people there who are very familiar with the blog and can often help. Thanks.

Scrollsaw Workshop Pattern Catalog DVD

The Scrollsaw Workshop Pattern Catalog DVD is ready for purchase. This DVD is a collection of all my patterns posted between May 12th 2007 to December 2nd 2012. That is a total of 1113 pattern books many with multiple patterns per book. The cost of the DVD is $20 plus shipping.

Let me explain again what this DVD is. This is an archive of all my patterns. All the patterns on this DVD are already available in my free online catalog. There is no new content on the DVD. This DVD has been requested by many of my readers so they could have an easy way of collecting all the patterns. The DVD can be used by clubs to keep in their library. It can be given to scrollers who do not have an internet connection. It is an archive in the unlikely case that my blog is no more. You can take it to craft shows to show perspective buyers patterns they can request.

The DVD is available to be shipped to many countries around the world. Just click the order link and select your destination to see shipping charges. They are very reasonable to most places in the world.

The following videos will show how to use the DVD. The first video show it being used on a Windows PC. The second video show how to use it on a MAC. If you can its a good idea to view the video before you purchase the DVD. It will give you a good Idea of how to use the DVD.

I use Kunaki disk duplicating service to manufacture the DVDs. They almost always ship within 24 hours of the order being made. They do not ship on weekends.

The DVDs are not returnable. Defective DVDs will be replaced. NO refunds are available for the DVD.

Christmas Picture Ornament.

I had a reader write and ask for an ornament that he could add a picture to. I already had the pattern for the custom name ornament so I modified it to accept the frame insert.

The frame is a two inch insert that uses a 1 13/16 inch mounting hole. A source for the frame is included in the pattern. It's best to use a 1 13/16" forstner bit to drill the mounting hole. You wil get a more consistent fit. If you don't want to spend the money for the bit just use your scroll saw and cut inside the line. Then you can sand the mounting hole for a snug fit.

Occasion Clock Pattern.

The next time you need a gift for a friends retirement or any special occasion this clock might do the trick. The clock uses a 2 3/4" clock insert with a 2 3/8" mounting hole. If you like making these small clock I highly recommend you purchase a 2 3/8" forstner bit. It's much easier and faster to get a good snug fit for the clock.

You can dress the gift up with a customized brass plate for the occasion.

Sue Mey has an wonderful updated web site.

The following is a message from one of the finest pattern designers in the world today. She just launched an updated web site. Check it out and celebrate her launch special offer.

Some months ago it became clear that my website that was started in 2007 needed to be upgraded – and so the work began. It has been an exhausting exercise but today I am very pleased to announce the launch of my all new and improved website! Come and visit, take a look around, give me feedback if you care to. I know it is very different to the old site and will initially be a bit strange, but hopefully in time you will appreciate the benefits, advantages, and improvements included here. The Scroll Saw Pattern menu has been revised and here are a few examples of the changes: Wild Cats is now a sub-category of Cats and Dogs, all the Themed Picture crosses are in their own section under the Religious & Inspirational category. Check out the Handy items category for items like Bookends, Frames and Jewelry, and the Special occasions category to see patterns for Wedding, Mother’s day etc. You will find Christmas patterns in the Holidays category. Christmas is further sub-divided to make it easy to find Trees, or Wreaths, or Ornaments etc. Certain sections still have many pages so if you should be unable to find a specific pattern or topic, the Search facility is much better than the old one (although I am still working on refining the search capabilities.)
On each page you have the option to decide how the items should be sorted (i.e. alphabetical or by newest items). Because all product were uploaded in bulk, it may take some time for this setting to work effectively. You can view the items 12 or 24 per page, or more if preferred. To make a purchase you will need to Register an account only once, after which future purchases will be speedy after simply logging in. There is a Wish list option where you can add patterns you like, for review at another time.
To celebrate the launch I would like to extend a Special Offer of 20% discount on all items purchased directly from the website. To qualify for the discount, Do Not use the 'Buy links' in my previous emails, as they open in the old BMT Micro shopping cart. My new billing company is the US based and globally used 2CheckOut. The only category excluded from the offer is 'Special Offers', as those items are already available at reduced prices. This offer is valid for 4 days only from Tuesday December 11th to Friday December 14th 2012. To receive the discount, you will need to enter the voucher code LAUNCHDEC12  during checkout.
Thank you for your continued support, whether by receiving and reading my regular update emails, purchasing from my website, or sending me emails with photos, positive feedback and chat. I also appreciate your patience during this time when I had to neglect pattern requests while directing all of my time to this particular undertaking.

Some of the latest patterns added:
 latest
Visit the Special Offers category for pattern sets at reduced prices and a great deal on seven digital books: 40 Christian crosses, 44 Christmas projects, 40 Boxes, 46 Angel-themed projects, 50 Signs & Plaques, 50 Clocks and 40 Love & friends patterns.
Patterns purchased from my website are conveniently delivered as downloads to your computer for immediate printing and use. All patterns are available in vector format on request.

Six inch round jigsaw puzzle.

Here is a 6 inch puzzle template and beautiful butterfly image to make a jigsaw puzzle. If you have never tried your hand at cutting your own jigsaw puzzles then give this one a try. I do suggest you buy the Flying Dutchman Superior scroll saw blades for the project. Mike over at  http://www.mikesworkshop.com/  sells these blades and they are of very high quality.

You want a very thin blade so the puzzle pieces fit snugly together after they are cut. All the instruction on how to use the puzzle template are included in the pattern book.

The picture of the butterfly is one I took a couple years ago so it is completely free of copyright issues. Use it however you like.

Poll Results:

Thanks to all of you who gave me feedback on the DVD catalog of my patterns. There were a little over 800 votes in the poll I put up. 587 said they would at least be interested in it. I also had a couple hundred emails from people who said they couldn't get the poll to work but wanted to vote yes.

That's enough interest that I decided to put the DVD together this weekend. I want to explain why I have always hesitated to make this DVD available when so many have asked for it in the past.

I have intentionally kept my blog mostly donation and ad revenue centered. My goals for the blog has always been to have fun, help out new scrollers and make enough money so that the blog does not become a financial burden. I have succeeded at that goal without selling a lot of products. I know that's what makes this blog as successful as it is. People don't want to come to my blog and see me trying to sell them everything under the sun. So why have I decided to sell this DVD?

This month Google stopped one of my primary streams of revenue. On the 3rd of the month they stopped ad placements in RSS feeds. What this means is that there will no longer be ads in the email newsletter. I know that sounds like a good thing for subscribers but it was how many bloggers were able to fund their blog, including me. They still serve ads on the blog but they just won't go out in the email newsletter. I know this is probably boring.

I have been looking for ways to replace that revenue without becoming just another web store. I think this DVD will fit that purpose for a couple reasons. A significant number of you have told me it is of value to you and it's not something that will take much of my time to run after the initial setup.

I will keep the price down to something as reasonable as possible. The DVD is at the publisher as we speak so I will have a better idea of what the cost will be tomorrow. I am pretty sure I can do it for $20 +shipping. I think the shipping will be in the $4 range in the US. My publisher will ship internationally but I'm still not clear what the shipping will be for that. From the calculator on their site it looks like it is still in the $4 range for most countries but don't hold me to that yet.

If this DVD is of any interest to you stay tuned and I'll have more details soon. Thanks again for all the feed back, yes even from the 16 folks that checked the "Are you crazy" box. I think two of those were from my wife and daughter:)

Snowflake Christmas Ornament Scroll Saw Patterns.

Three snowflake Christmas ornaments. These are easy to stack cut to make multiples.

I have a question for everyone. I have received several emails asking how to get all my free patterns without having to download them. I currently do not make them available on disk but would be willing to if there were even a little interest. I could put all the patterns on a DVD with a viewer program to view a thumbnail and open the pattern.

There would be a charge for the disk. I'm guessing it would cost around $20. There are currently well over 1000 pattern books some with multiple patterns.

I want to make it clear. These are the same patterns that are available free from my online catalog.I have people who do not have the bandwidth to go back and download hundreds of patterns. This would be handy for them. The DVD could also be kept at club meetings for sharing among members. What ever the reason I would like to know what you think.

There is a poll below. Please take a minute to let me know if it's worth my time to make this DVD available. Thanks for your time.
If a DVD of all the Scrollsaw Workshop patterns were available would you be interested in buying it? The cost would be around $20.

Snowflake Clock Scroll Saw Pattern.

This clock is simple and quick to make. There are a total of three interior cuts. It is 5 and 1/2 inches tall. Just big enough to sit on a desk without needing too much space. It requires a 2 3/4" clock insert with a 2 3/8" mounting hole. I cut the mounting hole with the scroll saw but if you have a 2 3/8" forstner bit that will speed things up even more. This project took less than 2 hours including finishing. The clock insert costs around $15 depending on where you buy it.

I glued the clock body up from two 3/4" thick boards to give it the thickness required. The top is 3/8" thick and I routed a small round over to the underside. For those of you who have pin end only saw you will be able to cut this project.

Candy Cane Scroll Saw Pattern.

This ornament will be a little fragile to cut. Take your time. Make all the interior cuts first. Carefully glue to candy cane to the backer. This will give it strength. If you prefer the more fragile look just leave off the backer.

I am making good progress getting the custom Christmas Name Ornament patterns finished. If you have an order submitted keep an eye on your inbox. Also if you have placed an order before the 26th of November you should have received it by now. If you have not seen it check your emails spam folder. Let me know if you don't have it and I'll resend it.

If you would like to order more custom ornament patterns I will take orders all the way up to Christmas if wanted. The ornament patterns come in two styles. One with the date and one without. The minimum order is 5 ornaments patterns for $5. Each additional pattern is $1 each.

Don't forget to order a pattern for your pets. Some people have been ordering a few first names for immediate family then the last name for friends as a special family ornament gift. Keep in mind that some names that are very long will be more difficult to cut. Use the following link to place your order.
