Country legend George Jones passed away April 26, 2013. He was 81 years old. George was considered one of the finest country singers of all time. He had many country number one hits including, "He Stopped Loving Her Today".

Mini-Grandfather Clock Scroll Saw Pattern.

This Mini-Grandfather Clock is 19 inches tall. It uses a 2 3/4" clock insert with a 2 3/8" diameter mounting hole. The fretwork is beginner level work. The three sections are just box construction. There are four dividers that are all the same size. The box sections are glued to the dividers then stacked and glued. The ornament fretwork pieces are glued to the front of the three sections.

Make sure you study the pictures in the pattern book before you begin. Build the clock in sections then stack the sections together. All the sections and dividers are flush to the back of the clock. Carefully center all the sections.

You can easily build this clock in a weekend. I spent around five hours cutting, assembling and finishing the clock.

Time for my regular apology. I'm sorry I don't answer all my email. I just get more than time allows for me to answer. I read to as many as I can. I try to answer questions from new scrollers first. Right now there are 668 unanswered emails in my inbox. I feel bad I can't be more helpful. I look forward to the day when I retire from my day job. I would love to do this full time.

Teddy Bear Letters.

Each Teddy bear is a little under 5 inches tall. Cut your child's or grand child's name. Put them on the mantle or let the child play with them to help learn to spell their name. Cut them from 3/4" thick wood. Make sure you do a good job of sanding the edges of all the pieces.

Let's Go Racing! Custom Flag Patterns.

I know many of you are race fans. I get email from you guys all the time. My wife and most of her family are big race fans. Her uncle was a NASCAR driver in the 60's. His name was Earl Balmer. Earl had a reputation of being a lead footed driver. He would push the car hard into the corner. So hard that he often did not come out of the corner. He did have one Sprint Cup Series victory in a qualifier at Daytona in 1966. A few of the drivers behind Earl in his victory were, Ned Jarrett, David Pearson, A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti and Bobby Allison. Here is a link to the race results for his victory.

Earl left a passion for the sport with many of the Balmer family. I wife seldom misses a televised race.

Smile, it confuses people.

Signature Card Font Trouble.

I had a few emails from readers saying that the font in the signature card I posted yesterday did not render correctly. With version 19 of the Firefox browser they included a built in PDF viewer. This built in viewer is not rendering all documents the same as Adobe Acrobat reader. The font is embedded in the PDF. The browsers built in viewer is just not rendering it correctly. If you are trying to open my patterns with a third party PDF viewer you may have trouble. This may include more that the Firefox built in viewer. I have not tested Foxit PDF viewer or any of the others yet.

I'll spend some time this weekend trying to figure out where the incompatibility is and try to work around it for future patterns. In the mean time if you don't wish to use the Adobe reader then the image above is a high resolution JPG that should print pretty well from any imaging software. You will need to adjust the size before you print.

GEEK ALERT:
For those of you using the new version of Firefox you can disable the built in PDF viewer. On the about:config page just set the pdfjs.disabled pref to true and it will not use the built in viewer. The about:config page has critical preferences and you can kill Firefox if you make changes you shouldn't. For that reason make these changes at your own risk.If there is enough interest I'll do a short video showing how to disable it.

When the Firefox browser opens the PDF in the built in viewer is also open a dialog box at the top of the browser asking if you wish to use a different viewer. This works but seem to default back to the built in viewer after a few documents are opened.

Signature Cards.

If you have craft shows planned for this coming summer these signature cards may come in handy. The cards are 2.5 X 1.5 inches. I left plenty of room for a signature and edition number. Just print as many as you need on nice quality card stock.

If you take this or any of my patterns to a commercial printer I want to point out the print permission on the cover. Sometimes printer employees want proof of permission to use before they will print a document. I print this permission on the bottom of each pattern I send out. This should be enough to allow them to make as many prints as you need.

Just a reminder that I have my patterns DVD for sale.

This DVD contains all the patterns from the Scrollsaw Workshop blog from May 12, 2007 to December 2, 2012. There are 1113 pattern books many with multiple patterns. Louisville Cardinals, 2013 NCAA Basketball Champs.

Congratulations to the 2013 NCAA basketball national champion Louisville Cardinals. The cards beat the Michigan Wolverines 82 to 76 in a great final game of the season. The game had everything a championship game should have. Michigan may have come out on the short end of the score but they have nothing to hang their head about.

The game was fun to watch from the opening tip. I have seen too many slow down boring championship games. This one was anything but boring. Both teams took it to each other.

Basketball !

This pattern is a large multilayer basketball plaque. The NCAA final four is this weekend. Congratulations to Wichita St, Louisville, Syracuse and Michigan. I will be watching every minute of the action. Unfortunately my Kentucky Wildcats are not there this year but another in state school, Louisville is. The Cards are strong, quick and athletic. They face the Wichita St. team that no one thought would be in the final four. Should be fin to watch these two go at it.

Syracuse and Michigan are both playing great ball right now. Michigan is much better that I though they would be. Syracuse has a great coach and a defense that drives other teams crazy. I have no idea who wins that game but I'll be watching to find out.

I plan to make a few small changes to the blog this weekend. I'm going to take down a couple features. I just can't keep up with everything right now because we are so busy at my day job lately. I have neglected the Custom Pattern Store and fallen so far behind that's it's just not fair to ask people to wait so long for the patterns. I'm going to take it down at least temporarily. If my spare time gets better I may put it back up later. I will try to fill all the current orders but I will not be taking new orders.

I also plan to remove the reader photo section. I don't like the gallery software I use and it needs to be replaced. I will keep all the photos and add them to the new gallery when I find one that is not so buggy. There is also a gallery inside the Community Forum. I may just use that and not have a gallery outside of the forum. Still trying to decide which options are best.

Sorry if the changes cause anyone a problem.

Let's make some toast.

Here is a project you can make in just a few minutes and everyone will want one. Toaster tongs are a handy tool to have. Keep your fingers away from the burners and off the hot toast.

You want to use a nice straight grained wood. Make sure the grain runs the length of the tongs. The tongs and the pivot are cut from separate pieces to keep the grain straight while allowing the splayed design. I used cherry and they feel very durable.

The places where you have to glue the tongs to the pivot need to be flat to allow a good glue surface. Take you time when you cut this area. I cut the long tongs on the table saw and just cut the other pieces on the scroll saw.

After the glue dries blend the pieces together by sanding.

I just used an oil to finish the project.

Paw Jewelry Scroll Saw Pattern.

This is a simple little project for the animal lovers. These little wooden heart pendants are cut from 1/8" thick contrasting woods. Alternatively you can use one of the inlay materials like Inlace or polymer clay to fill the paw cutout. I have shown both of these inlay techniques on the blog before. They are easy and look great. Just enter inlace in the search box on the blog to find more information on inlay with Inlace.
