There was tons of feedback from yesterdays post about slipping blades. I want to follow it up with a few comments.
I was ask by a few people if the clamp could be bent back into shape. The answer is yes and no. I have tried to bend them back into shape but there is very little margin for error. You can barely see the bent part sometimes. That tells you that the faces of the setscrew and thumb screw points need to be very close to the same plane. The thickness of the blade takes up some of the error but for $12 it not worth the effort to me. You good news is that there is no harm in trying to bend it back into shape. It's already broke.
Another question was if the lower clamp for the DeWalt, Delta and Excalibur are the same part. To my knowledge they are the same part. I would still order from the right part catalog just to be safe. You may void a warranty and I see no reason to swap them.
Next question was concerning the third party thumb screw I had on the upper clamp of the machine. I did a video review of these knobs back in 2015. I am not certain if they are still available but if you are interested in them the contact information for buying them is at the end of the video. VIDEO REVIEW. One word of caution. These knobs may allow you to apply extra pressure to the clamps. That will cause the clamps to bend. These knobs are for comfort. Do not over tighten the clamps! I cannot stress this more. If the blade is slipping, extra torque is not the answer.
I also had questions about why I bought the part from a source other than DeWalt. In the position I have put myself in I answer lots of email about everything scroll saw related. One of the things I do with the donations I receive from you folks is experiment with things. I was just testing the service of www.toolpartsdirect.com. When the product/service goes well I mention that on the blog. I rarely mention the ones that go wrong. I recently had a piece of software that I reviewed for the blog. It turned out to be disappointing so I never reviewed it. I'm not interested in disparaging a product that I may just not find useful. The exception to this is when it looks like a scam. Just not my cup of tea to do bad reviews.
These were the most common questions. I'm sure some others had the same questions and will find this helpful. One thing for sure. The slipping blade problem is a hot button. The post generated more email than my thief on the porch video. By the way, the police arrested the porch package thief a couple days later. He was charged with a felony. He already had two other felony warrants so it's not looking good for the guy. Sounds like drugs were involved as usual.
One other note. I am in a collaborations with Heritage Wood Specialties. Several people have mentioned that their web site requires flash and will not load on an iPad or iPhone. I have spoken to them and they are aware of the issue. They are in the process of looking into changes.
