Starter Tools List Update:
Have you ever thought to your self that the amount of sawdust under your scroll saw is way larger than the board you were cutting? I am always amazed at the amount of sawdust that I throw out every week.
In yesterdays post I made a list of tools. I was trying to list the tools in the order I would purchase them if I were starting a scroll saw workshop from scratch. The post received dozens of comments. Almost all of your lists were different than mine. A few of them were very different.
There were three tools that showed up on several of your lists that I completely overlooked. The Shop-Vac showed up on nearly every list. Yes. I agree. The Shop-Vac would be high on my list on afterthought. Whether you hook the Shop-Vac up to your saw as dust collection or just use it to clean up after, it is invaluable. A broom just won't get the job done.
The second tool that was mentioned several times was the Radial Arm Saw. This tool would probably not make my list but that may be because I have never owned one. I have owned compound miter saws but never a Radial Arm saw. There were more than a few of you who said you use the Radial Arm saw in place of a table saw. The reasoning was that for the scroll saw projects most all the boards are small. A Radial Arm saw can handle those boards and save space over a table saw.
The last tool mentioned in your lists that might have made my list was the router table. I had to think about this for a while. I use my router table on some projects but not many. In a regular woodworking shop I might put it higher on my list but for a scroll saw workshop I think it would be near the bottom. A hand-held router can probably get the bulk of the work done. On the other hand, you can build a makeshift portable router table from a board for nearly no costs. That would be worth the investment early. Tough call on this one.
This is one of those subjects that I could change my mind several times. One reader made a comment that I think carries a lot of truth. He said, "Use the scroll saw for a while and the other tools you need will become more obvious as to go." If you run into a project that you can't complete without another tool then you know that tool needs to be on your list. Makes sense.
