This Wood Whisperer Hand Saw is 16 inches long. The pattern calls for 1/4" and 1/2" thick wood. The backer board is not included in the pattern. You can hang the saw on the wall in your shop or cut a backer board to size.
In a general sense, a "wood whisperer" describes a person who has an intuitive and respectful relationship with wood, understanding its natural properties and how to best work with it to create functional and beautiful items. The term borrows from the idea of a "horse whisperer," suggesting an almost magical ability to communicate with the material. Many of you are Wood Whisperers, so this pattern is for you.
History of Hand Saws
Hand saws have been around for a very long time, basically as soon as people figured out how to make a thin strip of metal and put teeth on it. The earliest well-documented metal saws show up in the ancient world, especially Egypt, where copper (and later bronze) saw blades were used to cut wood and even stone.
As metalworking improved, saws spread through the Mediterranean. Greeks and Romans used a variety of saw forms (including bow/frame-style saws), and they pushed the technology forward with better iron/steel and more specialized designs for different jobs.
A huge leap came when sawing started getting mechanized. There’s archaeological evidence of water-powered sawmills in the Roman era (including a famous 3rd-century AD example at Hierapolis), which shows people were already using water power and clever linkages to drive saw blades up and down.
Later on, early-modern Europe took mechanization even further—Dutch wind-powered sawmills (notably credited to Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593) massively sped up turning logs into boards, which changed shipbuilding and industry in a big way.
By the 18th and 19th centuries, handsaws became more standardized and industrially produced. Sheffield, England, was a major center for sawmaking, and in the U.S., makers like Henry Disston helped drive large-scale production and improvements in steel quality—turning the handsaw into a mass-market, reliable tool instead of a mostly hand-crafted one.
