I want say a few words about scroll saw blades. I get a lot of email asking about which blades to use for the patterns I design. Several people have ask if I would include the blade # in the pattern. I'm going to tell you my thoughts on blades. Some are going to disagree and that's fine. Do what works for you.
90% of the patterns in my catalog can be cut with a #5 or a #3 blade. I use Fyling Dutchman Scroll Reverse blades because they keep sanding to a minimum. For very fine fretwork I will use a #1 or #2/0 blade. That's rare for me but I keep them on hand for when they are needed. For thicker wood I will sometimes use a #7 SR. If you are just getting started in the scrolling hobby just buy some #5 and #3 scroll reverse blades and you will be in good shape. As you stretch out into more complicated projects buy some #1 and #2/0 blades for the finer fretwork. If you regularly cut thicker woods the have a few #7 scroll reverse blades.
I have all the specialty blade for puzzles, plastic and metal. I also have spiral blades but I almost never use them. Like I said they are specialty blades and I don't cut that type of material very often. If you plan to cut any of these materials then give these blades a try. Spiral blades are popular with the folks who cut a lot of portrait style patterns. I use them only for portraits.
Wooden Vases Book 2
My second book of wooden vases is coming along well. I have all the vases designed. I am at the point where I need cut the vases and take all the pictures. I want to have the book finished in plenty of time for the Fall arts and craft shows. I have a presentation for the Gwinnett Woodworker scroll saw club that I'm preparing for this week so that will put the book on hold for at least that long. As soon as I finish that I will get back to the book full speed.
