Family Wall Sign Scroll Saw Pattern.

This is a two part pattern. The project is nearly seventeen inches long. It is best used in an arrangement of family photographs. They look nice painted black or natural wood.

Larger patterns like this have special challenges when you are cutting. If you normally cut sitting down you might find it easier to stand with a larger project. You may need to plan your cuts further in advance. On a small throat saw you may need special techniques to avoid hitting the wood at the back of the throat.

Long weekend so far. Sue Mey's new e-Magazine is out. Link below.

Sorry that I have not posted anything this weekend. As some of you know I work as a service tech for Xerox. I have been with the company over 35 years. It's been a great career but like any job it has it's challenges. We work a lot of overtime. This weekend has been especially brutal. I have over 20 hours of overtime since Friday night and I still have tonight to go. At one point this weekend I worked 24 hours on one hour of sleep. Funny, that use to be a lot easier when I was 30.

As you can imagine this puts a snag in my fun with the blog. It also means no email gets replied to. It also kills the creative energy to design a pattern.

I'm not really complaining because I have a lot of friends who need jobs so I'm lucky to have one. Actually I probably am complaining but I'm an old guy and that's what we do.

The machines we work on generally do most of their running at night. The companies that own them spend thousands of dollars a month on service contracts. They depend on us to keep them running 24/7. Downtime is measured in thousands of dollars an hour.

While I was working last night I did a video walk around of the machine I was servicing. No reason for the video other than I was waiting for it to boot up. I receive a lot of email asking what I do for a living so I thought I would share the video. It's only a minute so it won't put you to sleep.

I had a few minutes before I try to go to bed so I designed a pattern that reflects what I hope to feel one of these days.

This is my fourth e-Magazine and I would like to thank all who have been supporting this venture. The main theme for this issue is ‘Nature’ and ‘Garden’. There are also a few projects for Father’s Day, which is celebrated on June 21 in many countries. In addition, the Patriotic butterfly should come in handy for those in the US, either for Memorial Day – May 25, Flag Day – June 14, or Independence Day – July 4. I like to include a religious pattern, and hope that you enjoy making the simple ‘Heart with cross’ project. Anyone not sure how to tackle a particular project, can refer to the Basic Scroll Saw Procedures article included. There are 16 different projects – all new patterns, not available on my website.

A great sight to see and a Class of 2015 Scroll Saw Pattern.

One thing our hobby needs is an infusion of younger scrollers. Our demographics tend to skew toward the more mature crowd. It's important that manufacturers know that new people are entering the hobby so they will continue to support us with new products. It's also just wonderful to see young people enjoy them selves in a creative art.

I received this email from Gaylen the other day and I wanted to share it with you all. Gaylen had a great opportunity to share our craft with several middle and high school children. He also sent along a few pictures. We received permission to share the pictures and I knew you folks would love to see them.  It's also fun to read Gaylen's comments about how rewarding it was to work with these young men and women. If any of you have a chance to mentor a child please take the time to show them our wonderful hobby.

Thanks Gaylen.

Hi Steve,

I want to share with you an opportunity I received because of your much appreciated review on your blog 10-14-14 of Mr. “M’s” Workshop in Branson, Missouri.   Your information and kind words inspired John DeBey (Heritage Middle School teacher in Liberty, Missouri)  to call me a few days after your review came out, and he arranged for me to present a Workshop at MWSU  (Missouri Western State University) in St. Joseph, Missouri on April, 17, 2015, just completed.

John and the NW Missouri Industrial Technology Teachers Organization offer both Middle and High school students the opportunity to present a project they have made in one of their technology classes to be judged in competition.  Over 100 Items including everything from miniature laser work to a large yard shed were in competition.  Also all types of tables, cabinetry, chairs, wood turnings, etc., and yes many scroll saw projects.  Steve, you will be pleased to know that one item in the judging was a vase from you pattern collection.

During the time of the project judging, the students have an opportunity to watch demonstrations and/or participate in workshops. I was very pleased to be invited to share my Scroll Saw Workshop with two groups.

We had 10 middle school students and 13 high school students each in a 90 minute session. I shared with them a “point to point” style of cutting that I have developed, which helps students be able to cut much smoother, with no sanding of the edge needed when you are finished.  An added result of this system is they are much less likely to miss the pattern line.  I also included a blade selection chart that I have developed and use in my instruction. Other items covered were blade tension, blade types, and blade ‘Drift’ .

We worked on cutting a” USA” shelf-sitter using an OLSON #7-DT blade.  (Great smooth cut using ¾” select pine) Because of the large number in the sessions, we had two students sharing a saw so we were able to cut only about 1/3 of the project, but we talked through the cutting process and the techniques to use for the rest.  They now have “homework”. I am a great believer in sending projects home for cutting after the workshop is over, because they now have a reason to keep cutting.

Everything we covered I published in a take home ‘booklet’ so they could re-read and review what we did whenever they wish.  I also sent home blade analysis charts on all types of blades.  I believe the blade you select is 90% of your success.  All of these tips I learned from Jim Adam, the master toy cutter at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri on a visit back in 1991.

I must compliment all of the students for being extremely courteous, attentive, and very interested in the traditional style of scrolling I offer. Their parents, teachers, and schools should be extremely proud of them. My experience working with them was outstanding.

Along with the teachers organization, MWSU, and your blog, for helping us make the connection, I also wish to thank ‘The Wooden Teddy Bear’ Catalog for their support in providing the literature to help me to explain the types, sizes, and styles of blades for these students, as well as all of my other Workshops.

I would like to say this was one of the most rewarding experiences I have had in my 23 years of scrolling and teaching.  My wife Karen and I both appreciated the opportunity and enjoyed the day very much.

Steve, I thought you may want to share this, or parts of it, in one of your future blogs. I wish to thank both you and John DeBey for making this day a great success.

Enjoy your creativity and your scrolling, because we enjoy the results.

Plate Stand Scroll Saw Pattern.

This stand will hold an eight inch plate comfortably. A nine inch plate is shown above and fits but depending on the depth of the plate it may not tilt back as much as is needed for good balance. Please be careful not to place antique, expensive or family heirloom plates on this type of stand.

My actual plans for this are to create scroll saw plates that fit this stand.

The stand is cut from 1/4" thick wood and uses slots to assemble.

Celtic Knot Trinket Box Scroll Saw Pattern.

-

This five inch diameter trinket box is easy to make. I'm going to use it to store a few small flash drives on my computer desk.

This projects is all about sanding. Once you get everything cut and glued up you will be sanding until the exterior walls are completely flush. If you have a spindle sander that will work great. If not then it will take a little more time. Notice that I also put a round-over on the lid.

I want to point out a tip that I get questions about often. I get requests from readers asking if I can leave the title page off my patterns. The reason is that they don't want to use up the ink in their printer. You never need to print the title page if you don't want it. When you select print your print dialog box will open. Under "Pages to Print" select either "current page" or "Pages".

The title page serves two important purposes. One for me and one for you. For me it's my branding. That's how I earn money from my blog, through ads. The branding helps take readers to my blog. The advantage to the reader is that the title page has a picture of the project. This will show up while browsing folder in Windows Explorer making it easier to find the pattern you are looking for.

Sneak Peek at some of the vases from Volume Two of my "Wooden Vases on the Scroll Saw" book. Coming Soon.

I'm finally making progress on volume two of my "Wooden Vases on the Scroll Saw" book. Volume two will feature all new vases and ornamentation. This book of pattern will give you the option to use unique ornamentation such as pyrography, carved appliques, clay inlay and more.

For the vase patterns that have these unique ornaments I will also include a simpler version with interior cuts. That way if you don't want to try the new techniques you won't be left out.

Below are pictures of four of the eight new vases showing some of the new ornamentation. These are easy techniques that you can do. I'll include the pyrography and applique pattern and give instruction for successfully completing each vase.

Volume two will be $12 just like volume one. It will be a digital download available immediately after purchase.

If you want to buy Volume One there is a link below to make that purchase.
