The World Series is Underway.

In an effort to keep the daily post smaller I have set up this eStore for The Custom Name Ornaments and Wreaths. You can also find the other products I sell at this page. If you are new to my page please click this link and check out what I have to offer.
http://www.stevedgood.com/estore/estore.html

Two teams go head to head that have not experienced a championship in a long time. The Indians last won a World Series in 1948. The cubs in 1908. Most experts think the Cubs are the favorites and they were certainly the better team through the season. With so much riding on this series I would throw the odds out the window. Any thing can happen in this series.

I am all caught up on the custom name ornaments and the door wreaths. If you placed an order you should have it. If not check your spam folder then email me if you don't find it. You can place new orders by clicking the eStore link.

Well you all helped the Scrollsaw Workshop make it to the voting round of the Woodworkers Guild of America Blogger Awards. Thank you so much for your support. Voting for the winner in each category is now open and ends November 7, 2016.

I am up against some great bloggers in my category. They have huge followings so it will be tough to win. Winning would bring exposure to my blog and hopefully bring new woodworkers into the  scrolling side of the hobby.

If you feel the Scrollsaw Workshop is worthy of this award please vote for me.

Baby's 1st Christmas Ornament Scroll Saw Pattern. Years 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020.

I get requests for a Baby's 1st Christmas Ornament every year. I think that's great because that means more potential scroll sawyers in a few years.

I am currently in the process of reviewing the new Jet scroll saw. I posted an initial reaction video the other day of that machine. I received several emails about the price. They noted the price of the Jet and said it was too high. It may not be cheap but the good news is that it's not built cheap. Quality usually does cost more. Is that quality worth the price? That depends on the buyer.

I would guess that most of us started with an entry level saw. I started with a Craftsman scroll saw I purchased at Sears many years ago. I enjoyed that machine and made many projects on it. I ended up giving it to another woodworker who I believe is still using it. I'm not one of those woodworkers who will tell you that you have to buy expensive tools or nothing at all.

I know scrollers who are using the Harbor Freight $99 scroll saw and are happily making projects. Would I recommend that machine? No probably not. The reason I would not recommend it is because the user experience is not great and it tends to turn people off from the hobby. I would tend to say that the $200 entry point is a little better number.

If you plan to use a scroll saw on the weekends to build projects for family and friends then you do not need a $1000 saw. That does not mean you should not buy a $1000 saw. If you have the available money and like to have the benefits of higher quality machines then that's okay by me.

If you are planing to make arts and crafts a side business and plan to cut even low end production work then the argument becomes better for buying a more expensive machine. You probably want to be in the $500 to $1000 dollar range.

If you are going to be a full time scroller eight hours a day then you need to buy the best machine you can. You will very quickly burn up a low end machine. Even a mid range machine will not last long at this volume. It's just a bad idea not to invest the money at this stage.

To get back to where I started with this conversation. Do I think the Jet scroll saw is overpriced. We have to give the machine some time in the field before we know what the service issues are.  From what I have seen so far the answer is no. The price point is reasonable and comparable with other machines of this quality. I have many years of evaluating the fit and finish of machinery. The fit and finish of this machine looks fine and that's very good sign.

In the end you have to make the decision of how much investment to make in the hobby. The good news is that you have options.
