Two patterns for you today. The cutting board is 10.25" long and just over 6" wide. You can use any thickness you like for the cutting board. Check out the cutting board information below for some suggestions on wood and finish.
Best Types of Wood:
Maple (Hard Maple / Sugar Maple) – Dense, durable, and closed-grain (resists bacteria and moisture).
Walnut – Strong, beautiful dark tone, and also food-safe.
Cherry – Ages to a rich color and is easy on knives.
Beech – Similar to maple and very traditional in Europe.
Ash or Oak – Okay if sealed well, but open-grain woods can trap bacteria more easily.
Avoid softwoods (like pine or cedar) and oily tropical woods (like teak or rosewood), which can be too soft, prone to warping, or have natural oils that may not be food-safe.
Best Finish:
Mineral Oil (USP grade) – Cheap, safe, and easy to reapply.
Beeswax + Mineral Oil blend – This adds some water resistance.
Pure Tung Oil (food-safe version only) – Hardens in the wood and is water-resistant.
Walnut Oil is food–safe, but it is avoided by people with nut allergies.
Never use varnish, polyurethane, or standard wood stains—those aren't food-safe.
The Angel Fish pattern stands 10.25" tall, and the pattern calls for 1/4" and 1/2" thick wood. The angel fish is three lauers.
