If you cut and assemble it carefully this will be a fairly accurate caliper. It will not be as accurate as a commercial caliper but much of the time it will be accurate enough. Mine seems to be accurate to about 1/32".
The trick is to cut close and then sand the edges for a perfect fit. You want the slide to move smoothly but not be loose. The slide needs to stay parallel to the setpoint as it moves.
To lock the slide, use an eyelet screw with the tip flattened. Predrill a hole in the back of the slide and insert the eyelet screw until it touches the caliper body.
The pattern includes paper rulers you can print. Some printers are not accurate. After you print the ruler check it against a known accurate ruler. Also double-check that the pdf print dialog is set "actual size". Look at page two of the pattern for details.
