Both of today's patterns are a little over ten inches wide. They call for 1/4" thick wood but you can substitute as needed.
During the pandemic searches on Google for "crochet" rose dramatically. That trend has continued and the popularity is as high as ever.
I searched for "Is crochet popular today?" and these were the results.
Today, according to Pinterest, crocheting has become the most pinned trend on the platform, leading the charge with around 317,000 pins compared to “cutout dresses” which comes in at second place with just over 88,000. Unlike back in the '70s, crochet isn't just a weave technique to pull a garment together.
There are many "crochet" videos on YouTube. Here is one that goes over the basics.
Visiting the Kentucky State Fair Today
Patty, her sister, Andrea, and I will be taking a short trip across the river to visit the Kentucky State Fair today. It has been a few years since I have been and I am looking forward to it. We will spend most of our time indoors looking at arts and crafts but one of my favorites is the livestock barn.
My dad was a rabbit breeder. We always had a bunch of show rabbits in a garage out back of our house. Back in the early '60s, he was a rabbit breeder of the year. We often traveled around the country to conventions and shows. He had shown rabbits at the Ky State Fair many times. After he passed in the mid-'60s I always visited the fair for nostalgic reasons. My mom says they gave out a Burch Good award for best breed after he passed.
So I will visit the rabbit pavilion today and probably have a few tears in my eyes. It has been 57 years since he passed and I still miss him a lot.

This wall-hanging basket is 10.25" wide and 5.5" deep. It is cut from 1/2" thick wood. I think it will make a nice basket for the kitchen.
The basket can hang on a wall or sit on the counter.

This is not a scroll saw video but it could be. Alex cuts a compound cut reindeer on a band saw. He does this freehand. The video is under one minute so he does not waste any time cutting the project.
Alex is a representative of Carter Products at many woodworking shows. I have had the pleasure of sitting through his class for setting up a band saw. There is more to the process than you might imagine and Alex nails it.
Many years ago I did a video showing how to cut mini compound cut reindeer, freehand on a scroll saw. That is the second video below. The video is almost 15 years old so the quality is not great but you can see the technique.
