What do you think?

After posting yesterday's ornament pattern I had a thought. These triple layered Christmas ornaments might make a nice addition to my Custom Name Christmas Ornament patterns I sell. Here is a sample of one I did tonight with a name. These take a little longer to cut so I would continue to offer the regular ornaments next year as well.

Let me know what you think and if you guys like these I'll put up an order page for them this weekend. The price would be the same. $1 per name with a 5 name minimum order. I know it's late in the season but if all goes well I will add these to next season.

Layered Nativity Christmas Ornament Scroll Saw Pattern.

This four inch layered Nativity Christmas ornament is cut from 1/8" Baltic Birch plywood.  Small spacers keep the layers separated to give it a three dimensional look.

Let me give you some advice about cutting thin material like 1/8" Baltic Birch ply. You may think that because its thin it's easy to cut. Actually that's not always true. It's very easy to loose control of the blade when cutting with little or no resistance. There are a couple of things you can do to make the cut easier. First turn down the speed of your saw. That will gain you a little extra time to make your turns.

By far the best way to handle thin wood is to stack cut more than one at a time.  In this project you can easily stack three or four layers and give you back that resistance against the blade.

Masterful hand with a spiral blade. Charles Dearing.

This video is by Charles Dearing. Charles is a master portrait designer and friend for a long time. In this video he actually takes on a pattern that is available from http://www.sheilalandrydesigns.com/ .
The reason I want you to take the time to watch this video is simple. Charles is a master with the spiral blade. Learning to use the spiral blade on the scroll saw takes some practice. Because of his many years of cutting portraits he has mastered this blade to a very high degree.  Watch and learn from the best.

Mary and Jesus Star Scroll Saw Pattern.

scroll saw pattern
This pattern is 10.5 inches tall. I would suggest using two different contrasting woods for the front and back so the image stand out.

If you own the DeWalt DW788 scroll saw you may want to take a look at this product. The Lifter is an accessory that keeps the upper arm in the up position while installing blades. If you have been using a block of wood to keep the arm up then do yourself a favor and check out The Lifter at Papa's Workshop. I own this product and can tell you it is easy to install and works great.

A unique ornament scroll saw pattern.

I had a request for a pattern the other day that I thought was a super idea. Luckily not everyone will need this pattern but for those who do I hope you enjoy it. The pattern is an ornament with the ASL(American Sign Language), shorthand sign for "I Love You". Of course it can be used as a Christmas Ornament but I left it pretty basic so it can be used any time as a gift.

For you laser cutters out there this might be a nice piece of jewelry if it were reduced in size. It might be a challenge on the scroll saw but with care I think you could reduce it and make it jewelry also. Download Button below.

Sheila Landry Designs has another free download and a wonderful set of plaques you must see.

http://www.sheilalandrydesigns.com/free-pattern
Sheila's free pattern this month are these wonderful Christmas Sled Ornaments. These will not remain free forever so grab them while you can. Just click the picture above to go to the download page.

You just have to check out these beautiful plaques. They are bible passages and Christmas word art. They are between 18 and 21 inches tall. These are a must cut. They would make wonderful Christmas gifts. Sheila has a special running right now on these items. Select 3 and pay just $20. That's a savings of almost $4. You can also buy them individually for $7.95. Click the image above to check out this special.

You can also visit http://www.sheilalandrydesigns.com/ and see first hand just how wonderful all of Sheila's patterns are. You could easily do your complete Christmas buying list from patterns on her site.

First Look at Bigfoot Products Super Sander.
The Bigfoot Products Super Sander is a laser cut sanding disk.  What makes this sanding disk unique is that it has notches cut in the disk to allow you to see through the disk. This gives better control of your sanding. I have seen these disks before but never had an opportunity to try one out until now.

David over at Bigfoot products was kind enough to send me one to test. The Standard Kit comes with two double sided disks. One side has a course grit and the other a medium grit. The kit includes everything you need to make the disk ready to in stall in your drill press or hand drill. The Standard Kit sell for $24.95. Extra disks are available for replacement. David uses high quality sand paper so they should last a good while. You can use a rubber sandpaper cleaner to extend the life also. My only wish for this product is that David would make another larger disk. I could use a bit more room but that's not a show stopper because this one still works well.

This will probably not be a tool you will use every day in you scroll saw workshop but I think for the low price it does have it's uses. You can get more detail at http://www.bigfootproducts.ca/

I have uploaded a video showing the disk in action. Take a look and see if this is something you can use in your shop.

Thanksgiving Turkey Scroll Saw Pattern.

Next week we will celebrate a day giving thanks. I know a lot of people here in the U.S. would be thankful if the weather would give us a break. When you see some of the pictures in the news it's crazy. Six feet of snow! Hopefully the weather will break and everyone will be able to safely travel for the holiday.

I am thankful for so many things. I am thankful for my wife and daughter. I'm thankful that my brother and his family will be coming to thanksgiving dinner with us at my daughter's house. I'm thankful that my daughter cooks a mean Thanksgiving dinner! I'm also thankful that I can share my passion of scrolling with all of you. My list of thanks could go on and on but let me just end by saying thanks to all of you for giving me another year of writing this blog. I'm having a blast.

Three Layer Chimney Clock Scroll Saw Pattern.

This clock is ten inches tall. It is made up of three layers. The front 3/4" thick layer has the fretwork. The center 1/4" thick layer is for accent and the back 3/4" thick layer gives the clock mass.

The clock requires a 2 3/4" diameter clock insert with a hole size of 2 3/8". It is best to use a 2 3/8" diameter forstner bit for the hole but it can be carefully cut with the scroll saw.

The clock has a gentle taper toward the top. The top is curved. If you have some very nicely figured wood you could even do away with the flower fretwork. That would make a more masculine clock.

After the three pieces are cut you need to carefully align and clue up the clock. It does not have to be perfect because you will sand the sides, bottom and top for a smooth finish.

Image Problem Update:
It looks like Google has fixed the image not showing up in the email newsletter. At least I hope they have. This is the first post since I saw the change they made. If you are seeing this in the email newsletter and you do not see the image of the clock then just visit the blog and look at the daily post section. Fingers crossed.

We are doing well keeping up with the custom Christmas ornaments this year. If you would like to place an order just look for the order button below.  I will be working on a free display box for the ornaments soon. That will give you a nice wooden box to deliver the ornament to that special person. I'll try to get it designed this week.

Don't forget to enter the monthly giveaway. Sue Mey over at www.scrollsawartist.com is again sponsoring the giveaway and she has some beautiful patterns so make sure to check out her site. Details went out last week. If you missed it visit the blog and look for the contest post in the daily post section. You may have to navigate back a page to find it.

Tiki Statue Scroll Saw Pattern.

The last couple of email newsletters had a problem. The image of the pattern did not show up and in some cases it would close the email client.  This seems to be caused by a change in the way Google embedded the image in the email.  The email newsletter is just a copy of the daily blog post and it is automated so I don't have as much control as I would like.

I made a change to the image for today's pattern. I won't know if this work around will work until the email newsletter goes out. There should be an image of the Tiki Statue above this text in the email. If you don't see it then you can always open the pattern and look at the pdf. Also always remember that all the posts are always available on the blog in the daily content section. If you ever miss the email or want to see an older post just visit the blog.

The boring part and an ask for help:
I believe that the problem with the images is the change Google recently made. In the past when you embedded an image in an email it would be retrieved from what ever server it was stored on. This worked fine but had a couple disadvantages. It could be slow to retrieve the image and it allowed marketers to gather some tracking info on the user.

Google decided to fix this issue by taking the images in the email and caching them on their own server. Sounds like a monumental task but Google is Google and they apparently can afford the storage. Those images are then used in place of the original. The images that are then embedded in the email are also encrypted and sent via https instead of http.

When I embed an image in a post I upload it to Google via blogger and use that image in the post. That's the way I have always done it but now for some reason the above problem has started. Because they are on Google's server I can change the image link to http. That's what I have done for today's post and will see if that works when to post goes out. It works fine on the blog.

Below this text on the left is a small red rectangle. That image is embedded with the https intact. It's there as a reference to see what happens.

If any of you are expert web developers or bloggers I would appreciate input on this problem. I may be completely off base with what I think is the problem but I know other Google bloggers are also having the same problem so I think I'm at least looking in the right direction. Any ideas?
