If you live in the United States, you may be having a picnic or honoring your work effort. Today is Labor Day in the US, and while it may not have the same energy as Christmas or Thanksgiving, it is a very special day.
Basically, Labor Day is a big "thank you" to the American worker. It started back when working conditions were pretty terrible—we're talking super long hours, no weekends, and dangerous jobs. The holiday honors the people in the labor movement who fought hard for the things we take for granted now, like the 8-hour workday and safer workplaces. So at its heart, it’s a day to recognize the achievements and contributions of everyday working people who keep the country going.
For most of us today, Labor Day also has a more relaxed vibe as the unofficial end of summer. It's that last big three-day weekend to hit the beach, have a barbecue with family and friends, or just chill out before the fall season kicks in. It's also famous for marking the start of the school year and for all the huge sales you see everywhere. So, it's a mix of honoring history and enjoying one last summer time.
The Christmas-themed candle holder is large. It is 8" from flat to flat edge. It will hold a 6" diameter candle with no problem. It is cut from 1/4" thick wood. There is quite a bit of cutting in this pattern, so you may consider stack cutting to save some time.
Here are ten unusual facts about Labor Day:
1. A Contested Founder:
No one knows for sure who invented Labor Day; both Peter McGuire, a carpenter, and Matthew Maguire, a machinist, have been credited with the idea.
2. Not Always on a Monday:
The first U.S. Labor Day celebration on September 5, 1882, was on a Tuesday.
3. First Official State Holiday:
Oregon was the first state to make Labor Day an official holiday, doing so in 1887.
4. Originally a Protest:
The holiday grew out of protests against unsafe working conditions, long hours, and low wages during the 19th-century Industrial Revolution.
5. A Federal Holiday, Much Later:
While first celebrated in 1882 and declared a state holiday in 1887, Labor Day didn't become a federal holiday until 1894 when President Grover Cleveland signed it into law.
6. The End of White Clothes:
The fashion rule of not wearing white after Labor Day emerged from the Victorian era, when it signaled that the summer vacation season was over and people were returning to work and school.
7. A Canadian Origin:
Some historical accounts suggest the idea for Labor Day, or Labour Day, actually originated in Canada.
8. The Unofficial Start of the NFL Season:
The first official NFL season game is often played on the Thursday following Labor Day.
9. A Very Popular Travel Day:
Labor Day is one of the busiest travel days of the year in the U.S., often ranking behind only the days surrounding Christmas and Thanksgiving.
10. The First Waffle House:
The very first Waffle House restaurant opened its doors on Labor Day in 1955 in Avondale Estates, Georgia.
