I get a lot of requests for patterns. Many times the requested pattern is of a subject that I am not educated about. This is one of those times. If there are mistakes in this pattern or the information I present then it is from ignorance and not malice.
The request was for a Mandala design. The request was from a person who looked at the design as art and also did not understand the symbolism from a cultural perspective.
Man-da-la, noun. A geometric figure representing the universe in Hindu and Buddhist symbolism. Apparently, they are sometimes used to focus attention for meditation. The design is made up of symbols in a concentric shape. That is just about the extent of what I have read.
I did not start from scratch. I used a Mandala figure but I altered it somewhat to make it easier to cut on the scroll saw. However, you use this pattern I think the design is very pleasing to look at. It will also be a fun project to cut.
In the simulated images above I am showing the design cut from different species of wood and metallic paint. I think this design would look beautiful with gold spray paint of gold leaf.
I designed the pattern in two sizes. The smaller pattern is 8" in diameter and the larger pattern is 10.25" in diameter. This is one of those patterns that could be cut from any thickness of wood depending on how you intend to use it. With thicker wood, you could eliminate the backer board.
Please feel welcome to educate me if there are any mistakes in this text or the pattern.
The following is an incredible video of Tibetan Monks creating a sand Mandala. It took them four days to complete and the finished art is beautiful. After four days of work, the Monks sweep up the sand as a symbol of the impermanence of existence. The video is under 3 minutes.
