He was in the shop working while he was stressed over an event that had happened earlier in the day. He told me he was thinking about the event just before he was injured.
Woodworking tools can be dangerous if they are not given the respect they deserve. It is so important to be focused when you work around woodworking tools. Do not even go to your shop if you are tired. Stay away if you have been drinking. If you are on prescription medications ask your doctor if it has the potential to alter your focus.
I have personally been injured a couple times in the shop. One time it was because I was using a tool without the proper knowledge to use it safely. The other time I was not focused on safety and performed an unsafe operation. Both of my injuries were unacceptable and should not have happened. It's our responsibility to make sure anyone in our shop has the knowledge and skill to operate the tools safely at all times.
There are thousands of serious hand injuries every year in woodworking shops. Don't be one of the statistics. Learn the proper and safe use of all your tools. A good place to start is the manual. If you still don't feel comfortable then take a local class. Stay safe and make sure you count ten fingers when you leave the shop.
