Easter Bunny and Chick Scroll Saw Pattern.

Download Below

Here is the first Easter pattern of the year. The bunny is a bit over seven inches tall. It can be cut from 3/4" thick wood. If you really want to jazz it up, use one of the LED strips on the base behind bunny and chick.

Answering Confusion about Spray Adhesive:

In the last post, I talked about the qualities of spray adhesive and glue sticks for applying scroll saw patterns. I made one statement that I did not make very clear and I received several emails about it.

I said that the way I prevent lifting with spray adhesive is to use blue painters tape under the pattern and not to let the glue set and tack before applying the pattern.

That statement goes against the instructions on the can and what most people will tell you to do. Let me explain.

Because I am using blue painters tape under the pattern, the pattern can be permanently stuck. We are not going to have to remove the pattern from the tape. They can be bonded completely and it won't matter. The problem is that to get the strongest bond possible you need to spray glue on both surfaces, allow the glue to tack for a couple minutes, then apply the pattern. That will be as permanent as possible but I don't want to spray the surface of the blue tape because it is very messy.

That leaves us with two choices. We can spray the back of the pattern and apply is instantly or we can spray the back of the pattern and wait for it to tack before we apply the pattern.

I have tested both choices several times over the years and I cannot tell any difference between letting the glue tack and not letting it tack when the pattern is applied to blue painters tape.

There is a huge difference if you apply the spray glue to both surfaces and let it tack but like I said I don't want to use that method because it is messy.

1. Spray adhesive on the back of the pattern and the pattern applied instantly.
2. Spray adhesive on the back of the pattern. Wait 3 minutes to tack then apply the pattern.
3. Spray adhesive on both the pattern and the tape. Wait 3 minutes to tack then apply the pattern.

When I try to remove the three pieces of paper after 20 minutes, number 3 is extremely difficult to remove. The paper almost tears. It is close to permanent.

Paper 1 and 2 show absolutely no difference when I try to remove them. This is not exactly the same as cutting fretwork but even there I see no difference.

Pattern lifting is the most problem when fretwork is very detailed. The paper just gets weak. Under just the right circumstances both 1 and 2 will lift sometimes. When this happens I just use my finger to help hold the pattern while I cut. My finger might be a couple millimeters from the blade.

My suspicion for there not being a difference is that I am applying the paper to the blue painter's tape. The results may be different depending on the surfaces that are being glued.

That is my explanation of the statement I made that was not clear.

Everyone has there own methods for how they work in the shop. I'm not trying to say that my way is the right way. My way is just my way based on my experiences. Use your experience and test to do what works for you.

Funny Kitchen Sign Scroll Saw Pattern.

Download Below

Just a funny sign for mom's kitchen.

Which is better for applying patterns?

These are not suggested brands. They are just for reference.

We have to have a pattern to cut most scroll saw projects. That pattern needs to be applied to the wood. There are many ways to accomplish this task but I want to talk about the two most common.

Most scrollers use adhesive to apply the pattern to the wood. There are a few requirements that we need.

1. It should be convenient and easy.
2. The pattern should stick well and not lift while we make our cuts.
3. It should be relatively easy to remove the pattern after we finish cutting.

At this time I think that two products are the most common. Spray adhesive and glue sticks. They both have advantages and disadvantages.

Spray adhesives are fast and some brands work very well holding the pattern down without lifting. The problem with spray adhesive is that they are kind of messy and harmful if not used in a well-ventilated space. You don't want to breathe the spray.

Glue sticks are not so fast. In the old day's glue sticks did not hold the pattern down very well. The new glues don't have this problem anymore. They hold well. Glue sticks are also less expensive.

By the way. I use blue painters tape under the pattern for both spray and stick. It just makes the pattern so much easier to remove and it lubricates the blade for better cut quality and longer-lasting blades.

So which is better? That depends on what your criteria are. I am always in a hurry to make a deadline so I normally use spray adhesive. I know that the stick does not take that much more time but habits are difficult to break. If I ran out of spray I would not have any problem switching to a stick.

Both of these adhesives come in different brands and purposes. I like 3M 45 spray adhesive. It is not the best adhesive but it is cheaper than most other sprays and I use a lot of it. The way I prevent lifting is to use the blue painter's tape and don't let the spray glue start to tack before applying the pattern.

I buy Elmers X-treme glue sticks. I don't use them very often but when I do, these work for me.

What I find is that everyone is different. There are some guys who still use carbon paper. If it works for you then that's all that matters. If you are just getting started I suggest you pick a couple of different products and test them to decide which you like best. Experiment.

I use CorelDRAW for all my pattern design work:

Currently $79.95

This is not a recommendation. This is just information for those who ask what I use to make my patterns. The reason for not recommending CorelDraw is not because I don't like it. I love this application and use it every day. I simply don't want to recommend a program with a large learning curve unless you are confident you are willing to take the time to learn it. If you are not sure that you want to learn then you are just wasting your money.

I have used CorelDRAW almost daily for thirteen plus years. Obviously, I have become pretty skilled at it. The crazy thing is that I still learn something new all the time. It is what I call a lifetime program. You may learn all the tools pretty quickly but applying those tools in creative new ways never ends.

There is more than one version of CorelDRAW. The full version adds a few extra features and comes with a commercial use license. The Home & Student version still has all the features you need to make patterns and is much less expensive. If you just want to make patterns for yourself, the Home &Student version is all you need. It is about one-fourth of the price of the full version.

Another option that is much less expensive(free) is Inkscape. It is similar to CorelDRAW but not nearly as well put together. It will do all the same things but a little more difficult to use. You can download it for free at www.inkscape.org. You can find hundreds of video tutorials for both programs on YouTube.

Good Boy Stickman Scroll Saw Pattern.

Good Boy!
Download Below

I know some of you will find this difficult to understand but I still get emails every month about my Stickman Series of patterns. They were one of the most successful series of patterns I have ever posted. Simple, silly, maybe funny and always weird. I'm not sure what that says about us but the numbers are the numbers. :)

Because I get so many requests for how to search for those patterns I thought I would do a quick stickman pattern and show how to find the past patterns.

If you visit my online catalog at https://www.stevedgood.com/catalog/ you will see a search box. Type Stickman in that box and all those patterns will pop-up. There are two pages of them.

You can use this search box to look for any type of pattern. Example: Type police in the search box and all the patterns that are related to police will show up. It is very handy considering there are thousands of patterns in the catalog.

I also posted silly remarks about each Stickman Pattern in the blog post. Here is a link to one example if you care to see my strange sense of humor.

If you click the graphic below it will take you directly to the search for stickman in the catalog.

Here are a few more of the silly Stickman Patterns that you will find in the catalog. Click the picture to go to that post.

Paul Corliss from Paul's Messy Workshop makes a gift for his granddaughter:

Watch the Video

I have known Paul for a few years. He has been active in the scroll saw community for a long time and participates in many of the online scroll saw events. He also has a YouTube channel where he shares his work.

Today Paul sent me a link to a video he did where he makes a gift for his granddaughter, Rose.

I wanted to share this video for a couple of reasons. One reason is that I just like to watch scrollers work. I enjoy seeing what kind of projects they like to cut and often I learn something new.

The second and maybe more important reason is the reason he cut the project. This was not a commission piece or a project for a craft show. It was not a challenge project where he was just trying to see if he could cut the project. He cut this project as a gift for his granddaughter to put that smile on her face you see in the picture above.

Anytime you feel down or have the blues there is one surefire way to feel better. Do something nice for someone else. Take a look at Paul's face above. His smile is just as wide as his granddaughters. Sometimes it's nice to get paid for a project but you cannot put a cash value on making someone happy.

Thanks for sharing the video with us Paul and reminding us why we do what we do.
