I had a request for a flapping-wing bird mobile. I finished it up tonight and posted a video so you see how it works.
This project needs more than just cutting the pattern and assembly. At every step, you need to check the balance. When the bird is hanging at rest his wings should be straight out like the photo below.
To achieve this balance the string need to be attached to the wings in the correct place. You can also add weight to the wings to achieve the balance.
Trust me when I say that this project will take some tinkering to get it flying smoothly.
Notice in the photo below that I attached the wings using small eyelet screws. A total of 8 screws were used. This was probably overkilled. You could just use fishing line to attach the wings. Just make sure the wings are centered at the center of gravity of the body. Drill holes and create a loose loop. You could also use fabric glued to the top and bottom of the wings and attache that to the body.
