Collapsible Basket Scroll Saw Pattern.

If you are not familiar with the collapsible scroll saw baskets let me explain. To make the bowl part of the basket the table of the saw is set to a small tilt. A continuous spiral is cut in the wood. If the angle is cut correctly the basket will open to the right depth.

The basket can be stored flat and opened for display. I included complete instruction in the pattern.

Direction makes the difference: It's difficult to visualize.

I received an email today with a question that is a difficult concept to visualize. The question is about relief cuts on the scroll saw. Here is the question.

Good morning Steve, I recently cut out the Wood Spirit pattern. The only issue came when I made the final cut for the raised face.  It came out the opposite. I made another one tilting the blade the opposite way and the same thing happened.  I assume not it is not the angle but the direction you cut?

It is actually a combination of tilt direction and cut direction. In the pictures below I cut two circles. The table is tilted left a few degrees for both cuts. I make a counter-clockwise cut for the left circle and a clockwise cut for the right circle.

To make things even more complicated, the direction of the table tilt reverses the relief cut. In the picture, the left counter-clockwise cut would result in the piece sinking into the wood if the table was tilted to the right.

When the table is tilted and you make a cut you are creating a cone shape. The piece will always move toward the smaller end of the cone. The distance it moves depends on the angle and the thickness of the blade.

Because this is often a difficult process to visualize I just teach making a test cut before you start the actual relief cut. If the test cut does what you want then you are good to go.
