Here is a woven basket pattern that is easy to cut and requires very little wood. Don't let the complexity of the weave pattern worry you if you are new at this. They are very simple repeating cuts. Once you get in the groove it goes very quickly. The 3/8" Baltic Birch ply is also easy to cut if you are just getting started. Give it a try.
I cut this basket from a 12" x 12" sheet of Baltic Birch ply. The ply is 3/8" thick to make a basket with the proportions shown. I used a Flying Dutchman #5 scroll reverse blade to cut this pattern.
The pattern is a nested set of concentric rings which cut down on the material used a great deal.
I cut this basket from ply but they are beautiful cut from two species of hard wood. Use a darker species for the middle and top rings and a light species for the weave.

Think Safety
Remember to keep the safety of yourself and others in your work shop in your thoughts at all times. Always wear eye and ear protection. Follow all the manufactures warnings that came with your power tools. If I demonstrate something on this web site that you don't feel is safe, don't do it. Your safety is your responsibility. Fingers are handy things, try to keep all of them.
