Countertop Wine Rack Scroll Saw Pattern.

Download Below

This countertop wine rack pattern is just in time for your New Years celebration. I cut the project from 1/2" thick walnut but you could adapt it to 3/4" if needed. The construction is slot and tab. If you carefully cut the slots and tabs for a snug fit the joints are strong enough without cross members. Just glue and tap into place. If you get the joints a little sloppy you may want to add three cross dowels between the risers. If needed drill for the dowel and glue them in place.

I want to thank everyone for the kind Christmas wishes. It won't be possible to reply to all the email but I am in the process of reading them all. I hope your Christmas was full and cheer and your travels were safe. Now we can get ready for another year.

Amazon prices for the DeWalt and Delta Scroll Saws.

If you follow me often you know that I track the prices of these two saws on Amazon. Why do I only track these two models?

There are entry-level, mid-level, and high-end scroll saws. These two saws represent the mid-level of scroll saws. These are the machines that many people who have more than a passing interest will look at first. I am not saying that you should not consider more expensive saws. There are reasons that they are more expensive. If you are comfortable that the hobby is something you are going to invest a lot of time in then, by all means, buy the best saw you can afford.

If you know you want more than an entry-level saw but don't have the money you want to invest in a high-end machine then these are both nice options.

I talk to tens of thousands of people through my blog. Some of you will buy one of these machines and not be happy with it. Maybe it will be misadjusted or broke out of the box. Maybe you just need a more capable saw. That's why you want to buy from a source with an easy return policy.

I have had good luck with Amazon return policy but you should read and understand the policy before you buy. That is true even if you buy locally. These machines are a significant investment and you want to know that you will be happy or get your cash returned.

The charts under the pictures of the saws show the price history over the years. As you can see both saws are currently at the low end.

Gluing painted wood surfaces.

Painted Backer Board.

This question has come up a few times lately. What is the best way to glue fretwork to a painted backer board?

The best answer is to not glue wood to a painted surface if you can help it. Mask off the area if possible or sand away areas of the paint if you have enough room. That is not always convenient so here are some tips.

Mechanical fasteners are very helpful in giving the glue a helping hand. If the project is thick enough for pin nails or even screws then that will normally be very strong.

If the project will not receive a lot of handling then a glue may be enough holding power. I typically use a two-part epoxy in these cases. You are still gluing the wood to paint so the adhesion of the paint is all-important. If the paint fails, the joint will fail.

Hot glue will also work as well as epoxy most of the time. I even use CA glue sometimes but I have seen CA glue or the Activator cause the paint to become wet. When that happens the joint will fail. I think this is dependant on the type of paint but I have not experimented enough to know for sure.

If the project will be put under stress then don't use glue alone. It will eventually fail. If it is an outdoor project, use exterior paint and mechanical fasteners plus glue. Glue alone on exterior paint will almost certainly fail out in the elements.
